The problem with these screens (not just S5) is the digitizer glass is glued onto the LCD.  Removing is not easy, and the finish you get when you reglue the new one can be sub-standard.  You could buy an OEM front screen which includes the digitizer and the LCD already attached and then its just plug and play.  However buying the digitizer only is a massive undertaking but far cheaper, just watch a youtube video on it!

Are the screen and panel all integrated these days? I would be wary of using any epoxy on it, especially as there are likely other layers on the glass, such as a fingerprint minimising coating.

You can buy glass only but i wouldnt recommend that, dust gets under it and it just isnt a very good job. you can also buy the full new screen for $150 - $200 USD. Remember, If anyone else does it apart from your carrier or samsung the warrenty is void

$1 reserve on trademe.

Get a new phone - happy.

I have to say that I am surprised that the screen is scratched. Like you, I found the samsung are normally scratchproof.

I think if you look under a bright light you will see a little bit of scratches if you have good eyes, but they are not usually visible and very faint

The S5 is water proof/resistant IIRC?

Beware of who you take it to if you decide to get it repaired.

I had an Xperia Z repaired by Omni-Tech who didn't tell me it wouldn't be water proof after repair. Later found out only Sony has the equipment to properly make sure that happens. Phone subsequently got water damaged and ruined. Huge fiasco and eventually they replaced it at their cost.

Just FYI :)
