There are a couple of things that are wrong with the chromecast - probably due to them trying to make it cheap(ish).
1. It can get quite warm - probably should have had external heat sinks on it. Some people report occasional reboots when it gets too hot.
2. The wifi reception is a bit weak. Its obviously not got a nice long antenna on it - its all internal. A guy that pulled one apart on youtube managed to add an external antenna and an external heat sink. He turned it into a frankenchrome, but said it stopped random rebooting and network buffering. Interestingly, inside the unit is a lump of metal that looks to be an attempt at a heatsink, he reckoned it actually blocked part of the wifi signal. I cant get more than 4 of the 5 bars to light up on mine even when next to the router.

That said my Chromecast seems to work ok. They are still quite cool.

be warned, some video-on-demand services force the HCDP compliant output path to prevent stream copying. that means that on some screens/tv/projectors chromecasting, miracasting, othercasting screens may be blocked and why you see the 'black box'. this typically happens when the HDMI connection doesn't negotiate the secure HDCP connection properly - or maybe doesn't support it at all

Robjg - I'm back and have bought myself a Samsung smart TV and now I get on demand no problem!! Next problem I do have I am still trying to get primewire which you have no problem with. I can access it on my smart TV but but get over run with ads so the links don't get a chance to go for me. What to do??

So you are accessing primewire via the browser on the samsung TV?
Its good its working - I guess the problem i s that there isnt any ad-blocker programs/utilities for the samsung smart TV (that I know of).

At least on a PC you can install some pop-up/ad blockers (so long as you dont block geekzone of course!)

So to recap. You have the chrome web browser running on a PC. You have the chromecast extension installed in the web browser.
You can chromecast (for example) your desktop to the chromecast dongle hooked up to your TV.
You can cast youtube to the chromecast.
You start to cast primewire to the chromecast and it flashes up - then goes blank.....

Not sure what to tell you to be honest - it just worked when I had a very brief play with it.
Have you tried checking the settings in the chromecast extension and perhaps cut the video rate down to the lowest rate (480 from memory) - just in case the wifi is not keeping up over your network.
There is also a "Google cast beta" extension that you could try installing in your browser - probably best to disable the regular chromecast extension first. The Beta has various bug fixes and improvements that are still in testing - maybe it has a fix for whatever is going wrong for you.

It appears that you cannot use the screen cast function that Chromecast provides with the TVNZ (and I suspect TNV) on demand apps. This is the answer I received from TVNZ when I asked the question:

At this stage I'm afraid that TVNZ OnDemand is not available on Chromecast as it presents a piracy risk to the content.

However, we are committed to continuing to broaden the devices which TVNZ OnDemand is available on and we may look to applications like Chromecast at some point in the future.

We do understand your disappointment, and apologise for the inconvenience.

So I guess we're out of luck until such time as TVNZ and TV3 sort out their apps.

Well that is a shame then, as I want a SIMPLE, EASY way to replace sky, and was thinking of goign onDemand wiht everythign, however that sort of fluffing with devices and computers just sound too, Hard! Especially since the wife will have to use it too.

If they could just make an app that worked on everything that would be great.

Piracy risk to content?? These guys have been listening to too much RIAA propaganda.

Okay completely sorted now. My Samsung smart TV is great and I am now accessing Primewire through my laptop to my chromecast on to my Samsung TV, Life is sweet..
