It's nothing to do with NZ carriers been lazy, When test software shows up it's tested very quickly (1 week of getting it) and then passed back to Samsung to push out

how come there are 35 official samsung s5 lollipop roms on sammobile.

looks like samsung have pushed to carriers for approval but nz carriers cant be bothered.....

thats what it looks like to me anyway.

and if samsung has not pushed rom to the carrier, why hasnt the carrier asked samsung for the rom to approve????

Here's a screenshot to make it clearer... It would appear that Lollipop is less than 0.1% of the installed base currently. Apart from your wild, unfounded guess that NZ carriers can't be bothered, got anything else?

if you were on Sammobile then you would have noticed they were for specific regions, as has been said its nothing to do with Telco's.

Frankly I don't understand the angst whenever there is a release of new OS for any phone, its like it is the end of the world if you don't have it when in reality your phone still works the same as when you bought it.

If it is a concern flash the stock Rom from Sammobile it won't trip Knox.

im personally not bothered, Im happy to flash a rom,

but i feel sorry for the general pubic that have to wait forever for an OS that is available in most parts of the world because our telcos are lazy...

ok, its limited to a few devices. NZ is just a country where we get everything last and twice the price - and this is another example of that.

im not trolling, get your rom testers to do some work, so everyone in nz on spark can enjoy a new OS.

A carrier can only test an update to approve once they actually get something to test

hmm haven't seen anywhere I can get a Note 4 for half the price nor are we last to get updates.

Personally I think you are trolling, at the least pushing the envelop a bit much with you gross generalisations

Hey sdavis,

Had to address this - I work in the devices team that does the network certification testing. My colleagues are certainly not lazy, and I do have to say I find it to be a little poor taste to imply that they aren't doing their jobs. Maintenance releases are a complex process with many stakeholders, and much of the available information internationally is of no relevance to this market. :)

I've posted on here about the process before, but clearly it's worth doing so again - NZ's network operators and their certification teams are not responsible for perceived delays in software update delivery. That is a prevailing opinion that has come about as a direct result of the tech press being primarily North American. The US situation with bloatware and delays and slapping logos everywhere possible is completely different from that in NZ. We spend a week making sure that a new software build won't break your phone/call it to drop off the network/cause things to stop working/et cetera. Also bear in mind that the general public does not care at all about smartphone software updates and is more likely to be upset that the interface changed than excited to receive something new.

Here's how it generally works:

Vendor (Samsung, HTC, Nokia/Microsoft, et cetera) identifies an issue/is alerted to an issue by network operator partners/is releasing a software version bump with new features
Vendor builds market/model-specific software
Vendor sends network operators the software build for testing
Build is tested, which for us takes a maximum of around one week if no major bugs are found
Build is given network certification approval for deployment - Vendor deploys build at their leisure*

*This is the key point. Some vendors do this immediately, some take 5-12 days, others just don't get around to deploying it at all. We do not have control over this and do not receive notification when this occurs. Unless it's an extremely urgent bugfix, it will generally enter a queue for deployment and become available when it reaches the front of that queue.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that NZ market Lollipop software builds have not been given to the operators by Samsung for testing yet. Lollipop OTAs having been pushed out in other markets means nothing when it comes to Samsung NZ, because they have different builds for essentially every market and network operator they sell into, and many different hardware variants to boot.

I'm working with the team and the vendors to get better information available publicly on the delivery of software updates, but as mentioned, it's out of our hands once we've issued network approval (And given I'm pushing for this in my own time, having people blame us for the perceived delays doesn't help).

Thanks for the first hand description of the process Nik - I'm not in the mobile space, let alone a device testing team so I hadn't been able to give this level of information.

I only hope that Sdavis realises now he's totally wrong and apologises.

I have successfully installed android 5 onto my galaxy S5, the model i have is SM-G900I

The taiwan release is fully compatible, used Odin3 to install it and no need to root the phone.
I cant put links in message since ive just joined but I googled "android 5 sm-g900i update" its on "theandroidsoul" website.

Wow, As NikT says, I did make alot of assumptions based on the US market, and what I thought would be common practices worldwide are quite different to my assumptions. now i think of it, spark slap boot logo's and customise the browser, so that dragged me off track a bit, but vodafone and 2deg do very little rom customisations to the official firmware.

Thanks for the new information you have provided and YES, I now realise I was wrong and am sorry for making those assumptions.

I am thankful that we have good community collaboration on geekzone to right the wrong even when the wrong is myself.

Based on your post I have restored faith in NZ telcos testing division.
