timmmay: I'm still waiting to get off 4.4.2 with my S4 -  same with my wife's UK sourced Moto G. By the time they get us to 5.0 I bet 5.2 will be out.

I support a moto g 1st ed on Vodafone. That got 4.4.4 OTA months ago. Same carrier?

I must say I don't really understand the relationships with carriers and OTA and different phone versions. My 2nd ed got 5.0.1 OTA from Vodafone but nothing available.from Motorola.update tool so had to OTA grr.

With the Moto G carrier shouldn't matter.  With my wife's one I had to go and "Check For Updates", it didn't volunteer it..  She's on Spark..

I believe there is still some form of carrier customization, my daughter's g2 (2D stock) knows it is a 2D handset, i think it was the TV3 ondemand app that 2D had exclusive on, i could download and use on g2 but can't on my unbranded One

Other manufacturers should keep an eye on Motorola, they are doing probably the best job this side of the Nexus program as far as updating Androids, clean near pure OS's and timely updates, its all we ask for :D

k14: Hopefully this fixes my Nexus 5. Since the day I upgraded to 5.0 I have regretted it. Terrible performance, basic functions don't work (camera crashes all the time), the UI is sluggish and a few other annoyances. I have even done a factory reset and things didn't really change. To be honest, it has even made me consider going back to iOS!

Nexus 5 on 5.01 here
Don't see any such issues. Performance is great. No camera crashes in the couple of months since the update.

Funnily enough the vast majority of Android users have no idea what Lollipop is.

Is it a case of keeping up with the Joneses, I'm guessing not as everyone will have a reason they need the latest to make their phone work.

Kopkiwi: I wouldn't mind getting any fecking update from 4.4 on my Note 4. Ya know, Samsungs flagship device that is barely 5 minutes old.

God they're useless.

This is why I've vowed to never, ever, buy another Samsung product again.  They sell it to you with all the glitz and marketing and then just drop you like a hot potato.

The Note2 LTE for VFNZ is still stuck on 4.3, with a horrid bug that causes music to stutter.  I took matters into my own hands and flashed a 4.4.2 ROM for a different carrier - fixed the stuttering but still terrible and buggy in other ways.  Put CM11 on my Note2 in the end, it's much faster but still a bit crappy.

I'm looking forward to reading the Nexus 6 threads when it's (5.1) rolled out everywhere to see how many of the bugs are squished.  That'll be my next phone, if I can afford one.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Amen,

I have just given away my S5

I still have a Galaxy Note II which I rooted not long after purchasing as I new Samsung wouldn't updating it much. Cyanogen have a 5.0.2 for it and I made the jump shortly after xposed became available. Loved the interface but battery life was such a dog, along with no data connection on mobile and severely crap bluetooth that I've reverted back to 4.4.4 (OmniROM). Fingers crossed 5.1 fixes some of these issues...

Edit: Muppet - try OmniROM, it's so much better than CM11, although it does suffer from the same camera issues.

And if the OEM's have their way the vast majority will never realise just what Lollipop brings to the table because it will be mostly hidden

Having been a pure google user for some time I appreciate the advantages of Lollipop possibly far more than a Sense or Touchwizz user might. The reasons for updating are beyond "keeping up with the Joneses" it is a fantastic example of a maturing product

Reasons I gave up on Samsung: Bloat & lack of updates.
Reasons I gave up on custom roms: battery life & camera issues.

My last update was pretty quick, but they're a bit slow on this latest one (but it could be rolling out in India the next few days, so hoping for the next few weeks for me).

I'm pretty sure I'll never see Lollipop officially on my Note 3, even though Samsung say it's coming.

I'm in no hurry to upgrade to a new model so they're not likely to get more money out of me.

With Device Protection, your lost or stolen device will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account - even if someone resets your device to factory settings. This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

^^^ This I like

sounds like you'll need to buy a new device

Why is that? Should come as part of 5.1 OTA?

it says "This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9."

presumably they have added something in the hardware in phones that are shipping with 5.1, so this feature works, otherwise a robber can just steal your phone and flash a new ROM etc

I wonder if this is part of the kill-switch legislation passed in the US recently

Also Nexus 5 on 5.0.1 here. I have horrible memory leak issues that cause app (including the launcher) to crash constantly. This has persisted through a total handset replacement (warranty) and factory reset. Had no such issues on KitKat.

I have to reboot my Nexus 5 every 2-3 days as it slows to an absolute crawl.

I'd never go back to 4.4 as Lollipop is so fantastic to use.. But was it ready for prime time? Maybe not.

I've got the Polish version on my Note 3 so as long as the carriers do their testing/adding bloatware and approve the release it will come.

The trick is to find a device that is non carrier specific but how to do that I don't know here in NZ as even Parallel Imported devices are usually tied to carriers.

If Apple and Google can bypass carriers for updates why can't Samsung?

It'll possibly be to do with Samsung et al wanting the carriers to actively sell their products. Of course I could be wrong.

I assume in cases where an update is bad for phones the carrier must support under contract the carrier will avoid it and avoid the issues.

Wife on Vodafone, check for update finds nothing.
