Finally on the official android blog:
http://officialandroid.blogspot.co.nz/2015/03/android-51-unwrapping-new-lollipop.html

Today we are rolling out Android 5.1 - an update to Lollipop that improves stability and performance and offers a few new features like support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones.

Of course, the main thing everyone wants is that memory leaking fixed and the hope that battery life improves as a result!

My Nexus 4 has been fine with 5.0.1  but my wifes Nexus 7 tablet has been a dog with it..  Her Moto G is on 5.0.2 and seems to have no problems.   Will see what changes in 5.1 for her tablet..

I wouldn't mind getting any fecking update from 4.4 on my Note 4. Ya know, Samsungs flagship device that is barely 5 minutes old.

God they're useless.

With Device Protection, your lost or stolen device will remain locked until you sign in with your Google account - even if someone resets your device to factory settings. This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

^^^ This I like

Why is that? Should come as part of 5.1 OTA?

I'm still waiting to get off 4.4.2 with my S4 -  same with my wife's UK sourced Moto G. By the time they get us to 5.0 I bet 5.2 will be out. I may even have a go at Google Edition one day to see what it's like.

This is my long lasting bugbear with Samsung, I rushed out and bought an S2 back in the day and they wouldn't officially release 4.0 until the S3 had been released, they held us S2 owners to ransom just to help sell the S3

Even the GPe S4's were late to market compared to HTC's efforts

I'm on moto g 2nd ed. No cruft so performance is excellent but the level of google integration is somewhat frightening.

What do you mean by that? It's android - of course it is google integrated?

I support a moto g 1st ed on Vodafone. That got 4.4.4 OTA months ago. Same carrier?

I must say I don't really understand the relationships with carriers and OTA and different phone versions. My 2nd ed got 5.0.1 OTA from Vodafone but nothing available.from Motorola.update tool so had to OTA grr.

You mean frighteningly good surely?!

I love the Google ecosystem, I also love a chunk of the MS ecosystem, I love the way the Google ecosystem allows me to blend the MS ecosystem almost seamlessly int o my Google phone

Hopefully this fixes my Nexus 5. Since the day I upgraded to 5.0 I have regretted it. Terrible performance, basic functions don't work (camera crashes all the time), the UI is sluggish and a few other annoyances. I have even done a factory reset and things didn't really change. To be honest, it has even made me consider going back to iOS!

With the Moto G carrier shouldn't matter.  With my wife's one I had to go and "Check For Updates", it didn't volunteer it..  She's on Spark..

I check updates weekly, still on 4.4 with the Moto G 1st gen.

CM12 on my own phone though, always get timely updates.
