The Chinese description is very interesting. It said those 3G bands will only be enabled in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and for Global Roaming. So, try to turn on data roaming and see it works or not.

But SIM2 slot definitely does not support 3 or 4G

That's good news that it's not a knock off, it really does sound like it's not supporting 850wcdma - I'd go back to the seller.

Roaming isn´t fixing it either! Paid $900 for it on a 1 day deal.

nitrotech: My money is on this being a Chinese knock off which doesn't support 850mhz wcdma so won't work with Spark.

We see them all the time - at first glance they look close to real thing even have the same model number as the original but inside just cheap Chinese rubbish.

Could be wrong but it seems like the most likely option.

So it's not really a Samsung at all? I'm surprised after reading these items

Doesn't sound like much of a deal to me...

Noel Leeming and DSE sell it for 999, but that's probably the NZ version.
This is a parallel imported phone and they sell for 900 and under every day of the week.

I would suggest you buy a new VF SIM card and a new Spark one and try them out. Could just be a bad SIM card.

Have you checked you are using the SIM1 slot, not Sim2? This is very important.

Failing all these options, return the phone and get a refund.

First, contact the vendor and give them a chance to remedy the issue.

If they don't and (I assume) she paid with a credit card, then try for a charge-back as the goods were defective.

If none of these work, Disputes Tribunal.

It looks more and more like a Chinese version - even if it's not a fake, it may have problems working outside China.

Return it and get one from a retailer... Sorry.

I revisited the web page and it seems like it is locked to one or two Chinese networks. Bear in mind I am not confident about this as the words they use could mean two particular Chinese networks, or refer to two different modes of mobile communications.

I am not from mainland China so do not much about how it works there.

In your opening comment you indicate that spark says it will not work on their network, if you visit spark.co.nz and in the search box input compatibility it will open open a tools to check the phones imei, it sounds as if you have already done this. The site is not often wrong, if it says it's not compatible then it's not and there not much more you can do other than return it to supplier for a refund as long as the supplier advised you that it will work with spark.

I took the phone to Spark and they told me that it was locked, as did the retailer. So I am sending it back to them and they will unlock it.
