I suggest that it's not quite so black and white as you guys are setting this up as - while I'd totally agree this phone will in no way be a "flagship killer", it's also not correct to label phones as "junk" simply because they're sold by those particular sites.

There's a real market made up of those looking for phones with relatively good performance but at a totally reasonable price - a recent threads started by the OP discussed exactly these options. Not all of us can afford to buy a "flagship" model but are equally not happy to put up with the total mediocre performance/cost ratio of most phones in NZ under $500.

Of course, these Chinese phones appear to inevitably come with significant compromises, as my experience of buying one of those Redmi Note 2s for my wife shows (how @#$@# difficult can it be made to update MIUI??!! I've given up for the moment!), but even taking that into account it's not "junk" compared to what I'd have got for the same cost (around $200) in NZ...

they better be, thats one of the drawcards. like i said, spec wise its a market eater, but will it be real. we will find out in half a month.

i think overall china market phones will make a dent in pricing of over priced samsungs and iphones. especially ones that have an international or US build UI with good UX design.

the asus zenfone 2 wasnt quite as good as an s6, especially the camera, but for 40% of the price id take it any day of the week. a meizu m2 note for 30% the price if the s6 is also a no brainer imo.

i cant see how the price of said flagships cant be dented when the obvious cost to build is a small fraction of the asking price, sure everyone has to make a profit, but thats just ridiculous.

Even if spec was exact same as flagship it would be missing local service support and warranty. Add buying anything on headline spec alone is usually a bad move. You can stuff a bunch of hi spec components into a device and still have it perform terrible if design is bad. Plenty examples on show in computer retail.

what im finding even more interesting is people seem to be more realistic on trademe with pricing vs flagships. asking 95% of RRP when the next Gen is about be released is so what Trademe is about (unlike ebay in Aus where people sell used items for used prices), the redmi and meizu and zte type brands ive noticed are let go for 50-60% which imo is what a used item of any kind is worth.

take a look on Trademe for what Xperia Z2's go for, I could nearly get myself a McLaren F1 (slight exaggeration in jest for the serious nellies on here).

The MTK6753 is a very average processor, used for most of the lower mid-range budget China phones, so I don't hold out much hope for the rest of the phone being flagship quality.

Keep on looking around Aliexpress, something like the top level Elephones will have better specs for same price.

Aliexpress <> Junk, just need to be well researched before buying.

Good points, but imo China market is a bit different. I'm thinking low consumer expectations of warranty support and device life in that market mean less costs there than other places.

i agree with that, but with NZ having parallel import shops legal, it often negates the issue. not completely but i do agree that is one factor. but also keep in mind for $200, well if it breaks 1 day over warranty vs $1000 i day over warranty that in itself is the flipside. trust me ive got 5 apple devices all of which have had manu issues outside of warranty that just shouldnt happen, bad design. vs the MS phones and asus laptops i own that have had zero issues.

i think the cpu, gpu and screen were chosen for battery consumption. which raises the issue of, what is flagship to you may not be flagship to me. if i cant tell the difference between a 500ppi screen and a 300ppi screen (i think thats the scientifically proven level) and i dont game and i watch movies on my phone and all i really care about is txting, calling, occasional skype call and maybe some web browsing to look up a train timetable, then to me flagship is battery longevity. i get for some 40 year olds who still havnt given up gaming like they were when they were 18 a GPU is hella important, all the power to them, these things in life are important to some, more to the point i do get media on a phone being important to some people. but its not to all.

As per jonb's comments above, you'll find other devices on sites like Aliexpress that, for a similar outlay, perform better than this one. Most importantly, I'd suggest going for one where there's enough feedback from other users in the same country as you're going to use it that it performs well in that location - hence why I went with a Redmi Note 2, as there was good coverage here on GZ as to how it performed and that it worked in NZ (other than Spark 4G in the regions which I decided wasn't a deal-breaker).

Your earlier thread was on NZ-sourced phones, but this one indicates you're looking wider now - so why not look at the Redmi Note 3 as an option? I'm kind of amazed at the performance of my wife's Note 2, given it cost me $200.

yeah ive looked at the redmi 3, i believe if the specs on this phone are real, its better suited to me. time will tell if its hot air or not.

truth be told its not a phone for me hence why local warranty was an issue, but ive convinced the user at the price being paid its worth the risk.

by the way which shop did you end up using for your redmi? its under the $400 so is gst free?

Yeah agree, its a different market. But when you add the retail at parallel import shop for local warranty support you see the price is getting closer to reasonable local market phones for most people. But bang for buck China market phones are great value, you just have to know what you are giving up.

Even in local market it is very likely my next phone will be a Nexus because better faster upgrade and update support than Motorola. Yeah Nexus way overpriced forever but it is ongoing support contract kind of I am paying for really.

You need to look a little deeper at these comparisons.
The BLU doesn't have the same screen resolution as phones it's being compared to.
Biggest battery user in a phone is screen; further determined by size, pixel count, and type. And of course it's about how much screen on-time you use.
After that.... well theres plenty of threads everywhere that talk about the generics of smart phone power consumption.
