Which totally sums up my experiences with the Sony stores.  There is probably a good reason that the Wellington one closed down...

Yes; and the fact that they always wanted RRP so they became the go-to place to actually see the latest Sony products but not the place to actually buy them..!

I found they match street pricing. I brought a Sony S when they first came out many years back and the guy matched the cheapest deal in NZ (Auckland Store).

Yeah, the store owner kept jacking the rent up. Probably why they could never offer anything other than RRP

This is interesting and something I come across quite often here in NZ. Having worked in property in another life, it is always of interest.

I've known a number of shop owners and office space occupiers here who have moved or gone bust because the landlords just put the rent up to unsustainable levels. I can't really work out why

1) The landlords would rather have empty shops/offices in marginal locations than occupied ones paying at least some rent

2) Whether there is a sensible arbitration system in place to refer the setting of rents to an independent professional in cases of dispute

3) Whether landlords ever use a rent formula whereby the rent is a sustainable number each month, topped up with a percentage of profits from the shop at the end of the year on an agreed formula: this way the landlord benefits if his shop is as good as he thinks it is!

Yeah apparently the owner only offered 1 year lease and kept putting it up each year to the point it just became pointless to stay there.

I didn't realize that the Sony stores aren't actually owned and operated by Sony themselves.

Sony make great products, but New Zealanders have been let down badly for years by the NZ branch, both with product selection, availability and accessories.

As an aside, this leaked a few days ago ... looks like a thin bezel Xperia may be in the works ...

That looks fab. Has "Bendgate" written all over it though...!
