Just added myself to the Aus Google Store waitlist for a Pixel 2 XL 64gb in black.

I'm not holding out much hope of getting it though. Billing and shipping address must be in the same country as the store, so no clever shipping tricks unless I wire a family member some money over in Aus!

I've put in my yearly tweet to 2Degrees asking if they'll stock it. So now we play a waiting game of "guess who's stocking the Pixel"

Sounds like good solution to me - and then it can be repackaged and brought over as personal item to avoid a nasty GST and customs fee.

Stuff bought online from Australia does attract the same GST/customs attention as from the USA doesn't it?

really nice phone and the translation via the headphones is a seriously cool feature. But it's lack of availability is a real turn off. I will wait for the Mate 10 Pro which is looking really awesome before deciding.

I'm heading over just before Christmas, so they might just be available in store? Still not sure on the price point of the 2 XL at around $1550 though. The LG V30, or as Kopkiwi said the Mate 10 Pro might be just as good an option.

That said, if we get it sold here locally, I might not be able to stop myself getting one!

I would imagine PB Tech and JBHIFI will sell these.

It's incredibly infuriating how different the AUS and NZ Google Stores are, you would think it wasn't that hard to offer the same options in NZ. The sad thing is you can't even complain to anyone about this.

I would much prefer to buy from Google than someone else. Thinking of getting it from the USA store and forwarding it to NZ would probably be a few hundred dollars cheaper.

I enjoyed the live stream this morning - played NZ's Lorde as intro music.

DXOMark score of 98 for the Pixel 2 camera - bests 94 for both the iPhone 8+ and Note 8.

They also mentioned they are using some kind of dual pixel auto-focus to produce a really nice photo in all environments.

OIS is also a nice touch!

I really want to get two, (one for the wife as well), as both of our Note 5s are nearing their end.

Was hoping they would announce VF NZ as a partner...

Buying from a NZ outlet gives you protection via the CGA unless it's a business purchase.

I just don't understand why they price them at the level they do. I will wait to see what a nz retailer has them for.

I do like the panda colours however :)

I was looking forward to seeing the second gen of this phone. Thinking out loud, I am not a fan of the curved corners on the xl, which means the corners are cropped in videos. It doesn't make sense to do it when they haven't removed the top and bottom bezels, and design wise I think it looks ugly. It looks better to have square edges when the phone has a forehead and chin. I think the galaxy has got the look right. The iphone X has these curved corners too but has removed the top and bottom bezels, apart from the ugly 'notch'. But you can avoid cropping in videos caused by the curved corners and the notch, by double tapping to zoom the picture out and to turn the side pixels off. I think the touch ID on the back is good and is in a natural position. Apple should have done this and used the logo as the touch ID. I also don't like how pixel phones are only guaranteed 3 years of OS updates, from when the phone is released, so will be more like 2 years and something. But iphones seems to get 4 at least for from previous experience, meaning potentially an iphone has a longer life. If the pixel was a lot cheaper, then I may have considered it , and forgiven the ugly design more. But there are many good android alternatives these days that also have pure android and look better, and a better price point. These flagship phones are only getting more and more expensive, but if you step down a tier, there are some really good mid to high range phones at a good price.

It's a matter of personal choice - I like the curved corners and look of the XL - I just wish they had done similar for the smaller handset as I really don't want a big phone (the S8 is perfect size I reckon). Apart from the size and removal of headphone jack, I am warming up to the XL.

I agree with you on price - $1,400+ for a phone that's pretty much redundant after two years use is too much to pay (for me, anyway). You could pick up two Oneplus 5's for the price of the Pixel XL.

The headphone jack is a disappointment but to be expected, market is moving away from it.

4GB of RAM is fine since it is stock Android after all so should be the best optimised.

I agree that design is subjective, but as a qualified designer myself, the design with the curved corners and the wide forehead and chin and the large curvature of the screen corners, compared to the outer case corners , doesn't look great. It think is is a proportion thing, and I know getting this sort of thing with curves is difficult to get it looking right. Especially when compared to other phones that have brought in curved corners, such as the LG G6, and new samsung flagships, and even the iphone, which have the corners looking good, the XL doesn't look as good as any of those IMO. I could forgive it a bit, if it was a lot cheaper, but it isn't. I think the S8 is one of the more successful designs with these curved corners, because it is edge to edge, so the curvature starts from the edge. Also by the looks of it, the Pixel 2 it isn't edge to edge at the sides which doesn't help.The iphone is different because apart from the dreaded notch, the screen corners and the case have the curvature coming from the same centre point, and in future models I suspect they will make it truely edge to edge, and stick all the faceID stuff under the OLED. I think the pixel 2 xl will look really dated when the next gen comes out.
