Yes I must admit that the Pixel 2 XL price will put a few people off but it is still $200 cheaper than the iPhone X

(....and worth it to me)

I've got a Samsung A5 (2017) through work and I like it. Now, I know that Samsung's have a bad rap due to their lovely TouchWiz software, but I was a firm Samsung hater prior to the A5. It's got a metal body and you can customise it to run similar to stock android (i.e. it doesn't look and run like a "Samsung" anymore). Battery life is great too, and I believe the price is advantageous compared to the Pixel etc. A7 is an option too for a larger screen (I assume it is the same phone just bigger).

If you don't care about custom roms/root, have a look at the Nokia 8. Stock "google" android, has been getting monthly security updates and already has Oreo, with Android P promised.
