Still far ahead of the U.S. On my last trip there I had more than one worker surprised when I paid with my contactless card.

Not sure why you say this. BNZ have had Google Pay for ages now. This whole "contactless" is new to one bank, not to the country.
That's true. I was really only referring to Google Pay. I thought the ANZ Wallet app was a little clunky. Now I can use my WearOS watch as well which is great.
Anyway, good to see more banks getting on-board Google Pay :)

If you can actually get it to stay enabled do let us know how.

I migrated when the ANZ app said too, and before I received the e-mail. Pretty annoyed that Google Pay doesn't allow you to use contactless ATM like the Go Money wallet. It's saved my bacon more than once.
One fly in the ointment with Google Pay is it only works if your phone is secured. The phones in our house are all swipe to unlock and that isn't going to change so no more pay with the phone for us.

This is something you should change. Having an unsecure phone is a lot like an open wallet - even if you don't use it for payments there is still a lot of harm that can be done.

Having used Google Pay quite a few times now I've noticed how much faster it is that the goMoney app, and how on some terminals that were problematic and fail occasionally on the first attempt that it now works first time.

Definitely agree on that one, I used to notice the occasional failure because I pulled it away from the terminal too quickly, was moving it around the terminal attempting to identify the sensor location or more recently was just of the opinion it was taking longer than it used to but since the change I've been pleasantly surprised that it now beeps done the moment it gets anywhere near the terminal (assuming the phone is in the correct state).
The ability to enable a transaction details screen has been a pleasant surprise also after noticing a friend having it with Westpac a while ago.

It's also handy for solving the issue of who retailers are!
I looked at my statement last month and noticed a transaction for $14ish from "Unilever NZ" on it and wondered what I could have possibly purchased from them. I found my answer when I used my phone at Ben & Jerrys to see it appear. (Unilever own Ben & Jerrys)
So am I the only one having an issue with this. Every time I add it gives me this "Couldn't finish setup to pay in stores, this may be because it is rooted or altered in some other way". My phone is not rooted and altered in any way. I have deleted and reinstalled the app but still no luck.

Brand/model? I believe it needs to be a google certified device. And not something that was, but in another language and flashed to a different one. Which it then isn't exactly.
Try installing google pay on its own, away from the ANZ app setup.

Does anyone know if "Samsung pay" is being supported by any of the banks? I don't see the benefit of a smartphone over a wallet - both reside in my pocket. Paying with my smart watch has some appeal.
Mike
The problem was in Google my language was set to US for Google Assistant to work in NZ and that was causing the issue. Changed it to NZ and it works now.
