Wow, that's entirely grim.

I am not sure I would import a GEN1 new form factor product. I guess I'll wait to see if @nikt brings them in and sells them locally :) That way I get a local warranty.

Also if they are seriously aiming at 3K I would have to think *very* seriously about that.

That is huge money. I am used to spending flagship money on product, I can usually justify it, but wow.

I was impressed with the idea.
The hinge is tested to the equivalent of 100 times a day for 5 years, I read somewhere.

I have a Tab S4 which I really like and I suppose the price of the Fold is "only" equivalent to a flagship phone and tablet bought separately.

I like the idea in principle but it needs the S Pen I think.

One interesting thing I've realised is that a top line satellite phone handset now costs less to buy than a flagship cellphone....!

Dingbatt: The comments I have seen about the phone screen being too small don't seem to get it. It only has to be a phone screen, you open the device up when doing things that need more real estate. If it had an s-pen it would be even better.

Agreed.. You don't really need a massive screen on the front and inside the fold..

It's like wearing a belt.. and suspenders.. lol..

Overnight I was considering whether buying a gen 1 device was a wise move (particularly at $US2000), and not having the Fold available locally has made me step back from my initial keenness.
Since it is rumoured that there is a Chinese OEM about to release something similar, it may be a better to wait for version 2.0 or 2.1.

This may be a bit like the LG rollable OLED. We will know they exist but will probably never see one in the wild.

I am inclined to agree honestly. I am generally the guy who needs the new device on day one, but I am going to hold off and see what reviews look like, any major issues.

Or I may have a brain explosion and buy one on the day as an impulse.

No local supply is a proper issue for me, as for me it's a primarily work device.

The argument from their side, given the massively low number of units they will sell, would they even make money?

There are a limited number of buyers for flagship phones, take away those who buy only Apple, and you then split the remainder over 3-4 brands. Samsung alone offer 4-5 flagships to split those numbers further. Take into account support, logistics etc, and I am surprised they even bother.

A lot of manafacturers sell to NZ at a loss, simply so their brand is truly global.

I have told this story a few times over the years.

A couple of years ago I bought a pair of squash shoes (Asics) and given I have flat feet, and struggle to find footwear that fits and is comfortable and supportive. Delighted to have done so, I called back to order another pair, sold out. Everywhere.

No problem, I call Asics NZ and speak to a nice man who says, indeed they have sold out, and they expect more in 12 months..

WTF I say.

Essentially, he details that we (AU/NZ) get a tiny allocation because we sell less Asics court shoes in a year in NZ, than a major single retailer would sell in one US State/city alone, over a holiday or sale weekend. Getting more stock for a pair of shoes that might sell an additional 20 pairs at most, in a specific size, isn't economical.

People underestimate the volumes we do and that for most manufacturers, sales in NZ aren't even rounding errors on a monthly report. We have no clout and there isnt a lot of motivation from a profit perspective.

Things have improved in this brand, but it was quite a bad situation for a long time.

Similar thing in IT actually. I once had a type of software I wanted to sell. Average license sale was 7-10 licenses per business. Minimum order quantity from the manufacturer was 50 and I lamented to the sales manager that the cost wasn't accessible to a small business. He basically said it wasn't worth the effort of even printing an invoice for 10 licenses but said he liked NZ and didn't want us to feel bad or miss out. Next day he sent me 1000 licenses for $0 and told me to go nuts.

Don't get me wrong. This device looks amazing, and I hope someone does pick it up and it's not stupid money, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I switched over to iPhone 2 years back so I can't buy one anyway, also $3000 is too expensive for me

But, I am very interested in phones with bigger screen but still can fit inside my pocket, so keen to see this tech get cheaper

I think it is a clever idea.

The biggest downside with Android seems to be the erratic nature of the updates. I am seriously considering at least ensuring my next phone is part of the Android One program, if it isn't actually a Pixel.

I'm in the USA in a couple of months and seriously wondering whether to get a Pixel whilst there.

Paying out a small fortune for unproven tech (US$1980). I believe at the release nobody got to play with one so we are only taking Samsung word that it works and is the next big consumer darling gadget that we all want.

I personally would wait for the 2nd generation. Don't get me wrong the concept is brilliant but critics are already asking the hard questions. The problem with the Galaxy Fold

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Considering you can probably buy an iphone XR and an ipad pro for cheaper, both which should offer significantly better experience, I don't know why people would look at the Fold 1st generation. It is not as though it is really that pockable either. But that big notch ugly notch on the fold tablet looks poor, and it has no real benefit, they could have put the camera into the thick bezel instead. The aspect ratio is also weird. The fold is a good working concept IMO, but it looks to be several generations away from a sleek device, and is why I suspect it was announced first.
