How are you using the app at countdown? I tried scanning the barcode on the part you scan the grocery's and nothing happened? Are you supposed to do it on the terminal?

Doesn't work at the Self-Checkouts Machines (apparently they are looking into it) but if your at a Checkout with an operator, you just give your phone to them with the barcode open and they swipe it for you (or has been in my case).

Hi team,

What's the latest on this topic, 4 years on.

Is the best option Google Wallet, StoCard or something else?

A google search doesn't provide anything convincing either way.

Current cards are:

  • New World/Flybuys
  • Countdown/AA/OneCard (though I use the BP app for fuel)
  • PaknSave ShopnGo
  • SuperCheap clubcard (barcode)

Lesser used but would make sense to add:

  • Kathmandu
  • New Balance
  • Probably others that I rarely use but have.

I'm guessing Snapper needs to remain on it's own card?  Or can that work from the NFC on the phone also?

All of the cards you’d like to load can be loaded on Google Wallet; if you’re already using or will look to use that also for Google Pay it makes sense to use that for sure. If you’re not going to use Google Pay it’s probably more down to which app you prefer.

I currently have both, simply because Gilmours wasn’t previously available on Google Wallet, but I see it is now so I’ll switch it over and delete Stocard. I’ve also got my library card in Google Wallet, so the only physical card I need to carry is my driver’s licence - plus the loyalty cards for the local curry shop, kebab shop etc, orgs that are too small to justify going electronic.

I’ve not found how to edit the name of the card in Wallet, eg if you want to also load your kids’ library cards I can’t see how to reflect this in the name (someone may know if this is possible).

For Countdown,  I was able to use Google Wallet, but now it no longer works but is fine via their own app.

New World, Subway, EB and Flybuys works fine for me via Wallet.

So still no standard/common method.

As a FOSS alternative to Stocard I use Catima (F-Droid or Play Store). Works perfectly for any barcode card replacement, and this way no one is profiling my purchase habits or targeting me with advertisements.

Still using Stocard for everything, including cards I only use when I'm in the UK etc.

As an update, I went with Google Wallet.

All cards loaded.  Have tested the regularly used ones successfully.

Also, despite suggestions that Countdown OneCard wouldn't work on the app, I found that it did for me today.  The self scan terminal picked up the barcode happily.  The headsup earlier in the thread about getting the Onecard number vs the SmartFuel number was heeded.

Yep, sorry I had meant to also report back on the Countdown thing as I tried it last week after reading the earlier post saying it didn't work. Also worked fine for me.

The one thing I've not managed to find in Google Wallet is the ability to simply load a blank 'loyalty card' and give it its own name, when a particular organisation's not included. Eg, there doesn't seem to be the NZAA, but there is an NZ version of the AAA! Or am I looking in the wrong place?

I'm surprised that Countdown hasn't followed their Australian parents. The 'Everyday Rewards' card for Woolworths supports both NFC and barcodes from Google/Apple Wallets.
