It'd be interesting to see what PB's workaround is for the GMS.

Mate 8, Mate 10 then Mate 20 owner. No Google is just a no for me. Maybe my next will be the Iphone 11 Pro Max just paying 3x the Huawei seems obscene.

The Mate 30 Pro is now in stock at PB Tech. Price is $1500 with the Huawei GT Watch 2.

I had a look in store. Amazing looking phone. Google Play Services are side-loadable. Apps that are required to pass the CTS profile match will fail. @freatism, @hio77 and myself all have experience with this issue as updates to the P30 and Mate 20 caused these devices to fail these tests. The issues have been fixed for these devices.

The specific apps that will cause problems will be Google Pay and the newest version of Netflix (older versions of this app will still work).

I decided to pass on the phone at the moment. Huawei seem confident that the US ban will be lifted at some stage and they will push an update to the devices once this happens for full Google Play but that is a risk that purchasers will have to take.

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Such a brilliant phone and cannot buy it.

Wish the ban is lifted.

I agree. Mate 8 to 10 to 20 and yeah no Google = no 30 for me.

Sad as this is stupid Politics. Google should never have caved so quick. Microsft still haven't

lchiu7:

Looks like Huawei is going to release the phone with an unlocked bootloader

https://9to5google.com/2019/09/20/huawei-mate-30-bootloader/

So for the tech savvy folks there, root the phone and  install a custom ROM and get all the Google stuff back. Of course no ROMs available yet but it won't take people long.

Does this means the phone will be rooted?   My mum is looking for a new phone and the black friday is coming around .... her HKG based, HSBC app will not open because it says her current phone now (Nexus 5) is rooted.  Not just this specific model but the Huawei lack of apps would be an issue for her.  Ie WhatsApp, Youtube for her cooking vids etc ... Google Maps also etc.

https://ausdroid.net/2019/11/10/managed-to-grab-a-huawei-mate-30-pro-heres-how-to-install-google-play-store-and-access-every-app-easily/

A pretty good guide of what to do.

Everything basically just works. I’ve installed every single app I routinely use on an Android device, and they all work, with three exceptions:

  • You can’t use Google’s Restore function to bring your last phone’s backup to the Mate 30 Pro – you’ll have to do it by hand
  • Netflix doesn’t work, because SafetyNet isn’t detected. You can, however, watch Netflix content in a mobile browser if you really must
  • Google Pay doesn’t work for contactless payments, for the same reason. You can, however, use your bank’s Tap and Pay app if they have one (e.g. Commonwealth Bank)

haihaipow: I do hope we get the 5G variant since thats the one with the newer and more powerful chipset. The non 5G kirin 990 is still good but not as good as the kirin 990 5G.

When it comes to price. It might be the same as note 10 and note 10+. Hope its cheaper tho

The 5G variant is now in at PB with a $1599 price tag including watch and lace buds. Absolutely slammin' device, after sideloading GMS I'm happy as hell.

Does the Google pay work by any chance? I am a current mate 20 pro user and two things that makes me incline to s20+ is the 120hz battery and better resale value.

Everything I've seen indicates that it doesn't, but if your bank has a pay-style app then that should work. I don't use my mobile for payments so doesn't phase me and I haven't tried but yeah, I appreciate that lack of G Pay will bother quite a few people.

I am stuck as well. The S20 Ultra looks a nice alternative but so expensive and I moved from Samsung for a reason. I still have so many staff here with faulty Samsung phones or issues all the time. I would love the trump issues to solve and Huawei to get google back tbh. Only alternative phone can see is the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro just out (and it has Snapdragon 865, not the Equinox). Camera very very close to the Ultra and costs hopefully about half. In an ideal world would stick with Huawei/Google as super happy. I think will go look at the 30, Ultra and Mi 10 once all in-store rather than pre-purchase the Ultra.

So yes, as folks have seen, the 5G Mate 30 Pro is now a go for NZ in Vegan Leather Orange. Watch for it to pop up at a few different retailers. It is very orange, grew on me quickly though and nothing a black case won't solve if need be. The grippy textured finish is nice. Notably the Kirin 990 5G looks to be the only 5G flagship chipset with integrated modem for 2020 as Samsung, Apple, and Qualcomm are now all discrete, making the Mate 30 Pro 5G a fairly compelling proposition.

Bingo, Google Pay is a no-go due to SafetyNet.

The Mi 10 & Pro would still be quite pricey - think ~$1500-$1700 - and single SIM. Xiaomi have stated that the Snapdragon 865 + X55 5G modem combo is twice the cost of the SD855 with integrated modem (around $120 USD), plus the 90Hz OLEDs are about twice the cost of the previous gen, and DDR5 RAM around 20% higher than DDR4X as well. Anything with an 865 will as a result be a lot more expensive than the range of SD855 devices we saw start from ~$999 at launch in 2019.

We're debating ranging for these at the moment post global announcement, good to know there's interest but half the cost of an Ultra they will not be.

Many thanks, @NikT for an awesome post. Really like that Mate bundle tbh. My only worry is if the sideload google ever got blocked.
