Annoyingly I've had to switch back to my Redmi Note because the wifi on the 4a frequently just stops working. No issues with the other wifi connected devices in the household, and both the router and pixel have been updated/rebooted.

Sometimes it seems to work fine and then other times there are huge lags/"no internet connection" notifications. Only noticed after I had spotted that it was frequently only connecting to mobile data despite wifi being available. Had been working until recently, so will leave it for a month and see if there are any appropriate updates.

I've not noticed anything like that - it actually works better than my old phone. I don't think updates will help you. Does it happen just for one WiFi network, or does it do the same on all networks? If it's all of them I'd call it faulty and have it replaced. If it's just one, then look at that network. Mine is fine on my work network (Cisco maybe) and my Fritzbox 7590.

Looks like a few others have this issue too. Like several others it only started for me a while after getting the phone, so I'm hoping it was caused by an update that will be fixed by a later one. I have reset my network parameters as per one suggestion, but my MAC is already non-randomized, so a different suggestion didn't work.

Hey All,

Just ordered a Pixel 4a 5g from Dicksmith. Says shipping from the 15th Dec...wish me luck that it arrives pre-Christmas

In the mean time I need a case and screen protector. Which I'm hoping to get per-Christmas too. An recommendations on who to use?

There is an Aussie outfit on Trademe charging a arm and a leg, KG Electronic, also found Mobilefun.co.nz. But they get terrible reviews

Any suggestions on a retailer to get a case and screen protector?

Cheers

I only buy Spigen cases, I've had them for my past few phones. I have the Rugged Armour for my 4a, it's thin but gives enough protection from drops and scratches. Since the Pixel 4a isn't in NZ you'll probably have to buy overseas, I got my phone / case from Amazon.com

Don't think I got one with mine, but even if I did I wouldn't use it. The camera is recessed 1-2mm behind the rubber so sitting on a table it won't get scratched, it would affect image quality so I wouldn't use it and take the risk of a scratch.

Thinking of buying the 4a, I see that there are two versions available on DSE/Kogan - an AU/NZ version and a normal one (presumably US version?). Does anyone know what the differences are between the two? I've compared the specs listing on both and they're virtually identical. GSMArena also lists only one model for this phone (G025J).

Delivered yesterday, Dec.30.

Surprised at how compact it is   :)

Much easier to operate single handed than my previous Moto.

So far it's been excellent.

:)

Hey Ilovemusic

Have been out of cell reception. Struggling with a pixel 2, that’s rear camera keeps crashing. That’s why I had to upgrade to the 4a 5G.

Ordered on the 2nd dec. Got dispatched on the 22nd. And looks to be at NZ customs yesterday the 31st.

Nice work on getting yours before me even though you ordered after me.

Was really hoping to get it before Christmas so I could take reliable photos on my holiday.

Question, have you got a case and screen protector?

They are on the Aussie dicksmith, but not NZ. Messaged them they said just to order of .com.au

Said I can’t cause I’m in NZ, which they disputed.

Cheers

So my Pixel 4a + dBrand case finally arrived yesterday at the same time - phone took two weeks to ship from Australia and the case took one week to ship from Canada. O_o Can't believe how slow AusPost is, I think the next time I'll just import directly from the US - it's not only cheaper but shipping is faster as well.

Anyway, really happy how the dBrand case looks and feels. The sides are quite grippy, all edges are protected, and there's a generous lip extending around the four corners which means I don't have to use a screen protector. Unfortunately I did botch the skin application a bit (seems like it's got very low tolerances), so I might order a couple of more skins.

Edit: Forgot to mention - rooted with Magisk 21.2 and running the latest blu_spark kernel (Jan 8) and it's been great. Can't wait for LineageOS 18 to go stable!

Other than the white back the case looks very similar to my Spigen case. Shipping speed is usually proportional to the cost, Aus post is a bit slow, but remember we're across Christmas as well.

Why did you need root? I rooted phones years back, but later versions of Android are capable enough I haven't felt the need. Also, what does Lineage do that Android doesn't do, other than be less coupled to Google?
