Gtrev: I will try to test vf in the future. Don't have a sim with credit available to me at the moment.

I was also checking volte >skinny to 2d again and it is not working as I previously said calls not in HD

Any update here @Gtrev?

How bright is the screen in reality? That's one thing putting me off this phone based on reviews.

I don't care about the number of nits so much, but the actual realities of using this phone outdoors.

I too am a big Xperia fan and I know this phone has been dragged a bit in reviews because of screen refresh which is not really important unless you are gaming... Also getting dragged for not having a good processor for gaming which is another thing I don't use the phone for, maybe for remote play which is streaming but doesn't need the same CPU.

The other issues I hear is the screen is not bright enough but I see many say you can still see it in direct sunlight just not as bright but the screen is amazing for media like movies, it has good sound quality via headphone jack and also has superior battery life and is one of the few midrange phones to offer IPS rating and full gorilla glass.

For me these are the most important things for me is to have good streaming media experience, able to run basic social apps and take decent enough photos while being super durable and having a long battery life and at least have a couple of years of OS and security updates without having to splash out 2k every 2 years for a new phone.

I am not looking to play CoD or Pub G, I have PC and console for intensive games like that.

However the new Xperia Pro - I is mighty tempting however i just know I wouldn't use it in the way that would justify me paying 2k+

It's sad that the NZ Sony Stores don't stock the Xperia line either... Really sad the market and variety of phones options are shrinking in NZ.

Anyway if anyone has go one I would love to hear your thoughts on it. I am holding off to Black Friday and been tossing up between the Xperia 10 III and Samsung 52s 5G.

Very sad because I have had Sony phones since Sony Ericsson and even had quirky ones like the Xperia Play.

Got my Sony Xperia 10 III today.

No Vodafone 5G out of the box, no Vodafone or 2degrees VoLTE out of the box.

Cooked it trying to flash SEA firmware, recovered using Xperia Companion, phew! Try again tomorrow...

Gtrev: Thanks for the info. Have msgd him and will post back.

Most of the xperia phones that come into NZ are Hong Kong sourced, and the stock firmware doesn't support volte. Changing to the SEA firmware makes the volte toggle switch available

You don't happen to have the steps you took handy do you @Gtrev? Seems to be a bit of a minefield. I got the 10 III SEA firmware downloaded at least...

@scottjpalmer sorry for not getting back to you regarding volte on vf. I was not able to get it to work.

Also 5g is not working on skinny/spark in areas that I have tried even though it has been activate on skinnys end. But hey that might change at any time with a software update as the Xperia 1ii meets all the correct 5g specs.

I used the latest version newflasher,
There is a guide on Xperiablog.net
If you already have a firmware file your halfway there.
I didn't use this guide but it should get you going.
Xda forums are another source for guides.

Hope this helps

Thanks @Gtrev

I got the SEA firmware flashed but couldn't find any VoLTE options in the menu. I found someone in another forum say their 10 III worked on an earlier version of EEA firmware so I have now flashed that but I still can't see any VoLTE menu options.

Can you please upload a screenshot of where the VoLTE menu options are?

It seems there are a few different ways to flash the firmware on modern Xperias. Some of the guides sounded considerably more complex than others, some refer to deleting some files from the firmware pack, etc but in the end I found a simple guide which worked. I suspect the continued development of Newflasher removes some of the earlier hoops that needed to be jumped through. I'll park a few links here for my future use as well as anybody elses.

Only download XperiFirm from here.

Only download Newflasher from here.

This is the guide I used.

Check firmware availability here.

This guy reckons he had VoLTE working on an earlier EEA (Europe) firmware.

Dial *#*#service#*#* to check which firmware you have installed.

Dial *#*#4636#*#* to check IMS status.

There is some speculation I might have to put my SIMs in a VoLTE supported device to trigger the network to provision VoLTE on them. Any thoughts on that? Did you do that with your 2degrees SIM @Gtrev?

Would I expect to see the VoLTE options in the menu if my SIM didn't have VoLTE enabled or do they only appear once the phone knows VoLTE is available?

Under network & internet > mobile network

I did nothing to activate volte on 2d. Just inserted the sim, which was brand new and never used by me in any other phone

Thanks.

I'll have to keep trying different region firmware until I hopefully find a winner I guess.
