nzgeek: It looks like the "Require device unlock for NFC" setting was added all the way back in Android 10. You'd think that it'd be available on most mainstream phones by now.

I'm running a Pixel 3a, so it seems that Google are at least trying to maintain decent security on their own devices.

The most unsupported phone series in NZ and yet it has more sane settings.

For what it's worth when Westpac was rolling their own you HAD to unlock the phone but they also gave you the option of just being wake only or no security at all.

And of course on the other side on team Apple, you have to authorize via TouchID or FaceID or a Pin before it will even activate the reader.

I don't think you'll get consistency between different flavors of Android.

Unlikely, but is it possible that

  • when you "wake" your phone
  • & that face ID / fingerprint "auto unlocks" the phone
  • & thus the transaction is authorised?

@ANglEAUT - I have a feeling this is directed at me; if so, I'm sure it's not the case I accidentally unlocked my phone, because:

  • I know my phone has always allowed me to make transactions without being unlocked, as I'm used to simply tapping the screen to wake prior to using paywave; I do this on a frequent basis, and I expressly recall doing this for the TV purchase. That it went ahead and authorised the payment without telling me to unlock the phone and try again is the unusual activity.
  • the chance of it accidentally being unlocked is astoundingly low because face recognition definitely doesn't work when wearing a mask! And even if by accident my fingerprint was in the right place, the reader on my phone sucks so much (thanks to the screen protector) it wouldn't have unlocked - it hardly works at the best of times!

Just tried today. My $21 transaction was accepted without me unlocking the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Snapdragon, One UI 4.1, Android 12, 1st March patch. ASB Bank through Google Pay.

Wish there was a setting to turn it off :/

I have had the pinpad say device authentication required or something and had to unlock the phone and try again in the past. Not sure on the threshold for it.

Now I am on a new phone I will give it another shot since the last one I had problems with all the cards disappearing so gave up on google pay.
