It is pointless you don't enable it. SMS is unencrypted and insecure, this has full end to end encryption Google or not meaning Google can't read it. Your mobile carrier / law enforcement can read SMS messages.

So, based on your argument about having privacy you have close to zero with SMS. Just enable it and job done. Avoid SMS where possible and use anything else like RCS (https://jibe.google.com/), Signal (https://signal.org/en/) and even Whatsapp instead. RCS is rather good as it is automated with Android.

Also, by using Android you are being tracked in many more ways. You're literally using a phone with an operating system made by an ad company...

I don't disagree with anything you say. I just feel that if I say "no I don't effing want to enable something" then the "effing software would not effing well ask me with a pop-up on the start of the app. But hey it's just a hill and everyone needs to die on somewhere...

Fairly sure that the 'chat features' being discussed here is simply enabling RCS, which, I'm no expert on, but I believe doesn't touch Google's infra - it's a carrier thing.

No point being stubborn here. End to end encryption in messaging is what you should want to enable and this is also seamless.

If you had an iPhone does this mean you won't enable iMessage because it is asking you to?

If it's Google's Messaging app, I am 99.999% sure it's just asking you to allow RCS, which is better than SMS, but still has its own faults... it's not really a hill that you can die on, it's more of a gentle rise in terrain.

I have had non delivery of them with it turned on, much like people with imessage have when the recipient has no data available at the time I send it, not really interested in troubleshooting it when disabling it works fine. My xiaomi keeps nagging me about it. Gets annoying.
