Have you confirmed what channel your 5GHz wifi is running on yet? There are some in the middle of the range that are DFS channels with loads of restrictions on them, if the router auto chooses one of those because its free, then the tablet may not connect to it. Then the router gets a radar detection which makes it stop using that channel and will fall back to one free from restrictions and run on that for a while, which will be when the tablet can connect. After a timeout the router will try the empty DFS channels again and the tablet will not connect.

Manually set the router to ch 36-40 for 5GHz. This was a constant problem when a friend sold some gear that didn't do DFS channels and people used one of the ISP routers on default auto settings (think it was fritzboxes) - radar events would happen almost all the time for some people so the wifi worked most of the time with some outages on the gear he sold.

Will do but Wifi always shows as connected with 4G even though the Router provides 5 and 2.5G and I have it on the 5G. Will try 2.5

OK - You lost me completely (seems not just me either).

I am guessing your tablet variant has a SIM card and mobile data - otherwise I dont know what you are referring to with the 4G reference.

If you are dabbling with mobile data on your tab, but your main issue is having issues with your home wifi connection - then keep the mobile data switched off.

Does your tab have its own mobile data connection?

If you keep the mobile data off (assuming you have it), does the wifi work ok?

If you have a router that has a separate SSID for 2.5G and 5G, can you just try and connect to (say) 2.5G and see if that works.

Many routers just show one SSID and expect the device to connect to 2.5 or 5Ghz depending on what it can see.

Some devices dont handle that well at all.

Can you login to the router and make a 'guest' SSID (for testing) and maybe just let that test SSID use 2.5 OR 5Ghz (hopefully lets you select ONE frequency) and then try and connect and see what happens.

4G is cellular, so the Samsung has a SIM card??

EDIT: Looking at specs it does NOT have a SIM card so not possible to connect to 4G.

Wifi radio frequencies are 2.4 or 5 GHz. No such band as 2.5 GHz.

Sorry my bad. TV dongle was also without internet this morning as sometimes happens and it showed connected to WiFi 4 not 4G

No sim in the tablet.

Am going to try it on a guest network next time it doesn’t connect.

Then perhaps its not the tablet at fault here? You should not be "sometimes happens" with things having no internet.

I think you are correct. I'm no genius at this and apologies for giving the wrong numbers, am looking at so many different devices as well as for friends it's not hard to get confused.

I set up a guest network in Deco app and tried to sign in. Connected with no internet.

Then went into the Deco app > advanced settings > to band and both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz are ticked, so as you say the device randomly chooses one of the two bands. I unticked 5Ghz and tablet immediately connected to 2.4Ghz no problem. Then I ticked 5 again and it’s still connected for now.

Have learned something useful today as my frustration with 'connected with no internet' alway happening when you need it most was the bane of my life. I didn’t know this was a thing as the last router I had showed 2 separate networks 2.4 and 5 in the network list whereas this router doesn’t, so each device chooses…wrongly sometimes. I can see this works however it’s not great to have to go to the Deco settings and untick the 5Ghz band each time to be able to connect.

I suspect that the Dish dongle is also having the same issue when it says connected with no internet. It’s inconvenient but at least there is a fix. There’s likely some more fiddling I’m not aware of to make this easier.

Thanks to all, and again sorry for the messy posts.

You could have just used the router you had with cable for the fibre connection.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I am still using the old HFC router attached to 2 Deco extenders. (Was talking about the  Vodafone one before that, minus decos which had the two separate networks)

I’ve got a new Deco router from the change to fibre which I haven’t attached yet because haven’t had the inclination to fight my way to behind furniture, cables etc to access. Maybe it will be an improvement and I need to get on with it.

You could try just disabling the 2.4ghz frequency on your Wi-Fi SSID and see how things go for a while.

2.4Ghz is a bit slower, but has greater range (distance).

Depending on how many wireless devices you have and what you are connecting to, it may be fine.

At least possibly giving you reliability.

I have an older Samsung tab than you (2018 model) which connects to a Deco m4 mesh network - 2 units with 2.4 and 5ghz both enabled.

Primary Deco is the router connected to the fibre.
