Well I presume the 399 pound includes their VAT so once that is taken away it would be even less, say $850 NZ. So lets say that with GST that's around $975 NZ so $500 for shipping including markup?? Seems really high?

Sounds about right :)
I would snap this phone up in a second if it was just over $1000 but as I said, If phones direct is anything to go by you won't see it for less than $1300.

guess they have to make a bit of profit, they're taking the risk of bringing in 5 handsets that might not sell.

and seeing the Sony Ericsson Xperia can now be pre-ordered (http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?utm_source=Rss&utm_cammpaign=PhoneDog&umt_medium=Blog&i=185317) so can't be too far away maybe people will wait.

I grabbed an HTC Magic on release day from Vodafone and have not looked back. Previously an iPhone 3G owner I can say from my experience that I have found this android phone to be better than the iPhone.
It has a sharp interface, easy usability, a growing range of free android apps (filling all the needs I have) and is a phone with excellent reception.

It will be $1100 including GST
and judging from a engadget's reviews, it seems the hardware isn't made for the software :|

Yeah I was looking forward to this phone, but maybe waiting for the Sony will be a better option, although the Sony will probably be great hardware, not so great software compared to the Hero, being their first Android phone.

Could the speed issues be fixed with firmware updates (are there even firmware updates on android?)

Judging from the review its very unlikely since its more to do with the fact that sense requires a lot of hardware resources to run the many different widgets and apps on the UI. So really I doubt firmware will do a lot to increase the performance.

Guess it's Omnia 8910 for me :\

Watched a few more Hero videos on Youtube. Does look really slick.

Gizmodo's review came to the same conslusion as engadget; http://gizmodo.com/5318860/htc-hero-review-ambitious-but-tragically-flawed

Phone Dog said exactly the same thing also.
Their video is much more in depth, with every aspect of the Hero being video reviewed. They seem to be less concerned about the lag, however its still is a problem.

Actually on further reading reading it's more of an Ipod touch kind deal than an actual phone, so Hero all is forgiven. Do you think the expansys Hero's will be different to the NZ release ones if and when they arrive?

Fix the hardware HTC and don't go for some quick fix optimisation upgrade, Just a little bit more ram and cpu speed. If you do this without a doubt this phone would be the official Iphone killer.
