Does anyone know if the HTC Hero will be released in NZ?

Even if it's not, you could always get it through parallel imported or something similar. They've had the HTC G1 almost since it came out.

Any ideas when or where this would be available locally?

A quality parallel import would be fine, as I'll likely use it on XT with pre-paid.

I know that there where rumor going around about the HTC Magic/Google Ion too, but there' no ETA on that yet either (http://www.wired.com/reviews/product/pr_0601_g2_handson).

Is HTC likely to be to only Android player in town for the foreseeable future? They're pretty pricey...

Have in mind that the first HTC Hero release is for 2100 MHz WCDMA only. A second version (U.S. 850 MHz is not released yet). You would need this second one for XT Network.

This is the HTC Magic, released here by Vodafone (900/2100 MHz) so no good for XT Network. The T-Mobile version would be any less good because it would be 1700/2100 MHz.

Well so far only 1 other manufacturer has released an android device afaik. That was samsung which released the device in the last few days. There are a ton of devices being rumored at the moment, which you can check out here. The HTC Magic has for all intents and purposes been given a release date, or at least, theres pricing plans available and pre-orders are underway. You do have to remember that android is still relatively new to the market, and its taking a bit of a while for manufacturers to adopt the technology, but give it a little while and we'll be swamped with android phone goodness.

Hero interface looks nice. Im still waiting to hear about phones like the Yulong N8 expected later this year though. (If only to see the hardware running)

Yeah pretty much. The problem is there is always something nicer just a couple of months away :(

But I want something with a bit of omph. The newer chips like tegra and snapdragon are both capable of hd video and encoding. I was hoping that phones like sony rachael will release this year and that they support the higher end media stuff. I guess getting that tech while still so new will cost a fair bit. Hence the hero is so darn tempting :P There is also the samsung galaxy as well.

Price of the hero overseas is the same as the magic. I believe.

Edit: according to engadget rockchip are getting android cranking latter this year. An el cheapo chinese made handset would probably tie me over till something like the sony is released

i've got a vodafone magic and will probably wait till the end of the year and upgrade to the nicest android handset available then.

Cheers for the heads up pc, but $1599 I would rather wait a while for it to come down.

Thats a huge mark-up considering the exchange rate. The real cost would be closer to $1300, and I'm sure one of the reputable sellers on trade me will have it at that price.

$1300?/?? The websites I've seen quote 399 pounds which is around $950 NZ so maybe just over 1k here?

You need to take into consideration the shipping, GST, mark-up etc.
