I brought the Hero a couple of days ago and have been trying to set it up to work correctly on Vodafone. Basically I have got it set up to accept 3G so I can access Google Maps, Market and anything else that downloads data, but when I use the browser it doesnt load pages at all. I downloaded Opera Mini which works fine.
The normal android browser works fine in wifi mode.

Ive got the APN set up as follows:

APN: www.vodafone.net.nz
Proxy: 172.030.038.003
Port: 8080

Is this correct, or is there more to it?

If anyone could help me it would be fantastic.

Can I ask where you got it from because I cant get Market on mine? It is an Asian model (Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc).

Additionally can anyone point me towards someone in Auckland with the technical expertise to root my HTC Hero. I thought I had it sussed until reading that phones with a build number of 2.73.xxx or later required an extra step using a 'gold card'. I pride myself in being reasonably tech savvy, but the steps involved have scared me off.

Go to the Market and download More Locale and set it to English NZ. Cany help with the rooting query, I am waiting until HTC bring out the update to 2.1 and see what that gives me.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

With the market I had to search around a bit to get it to work. I had setup a google account the day before getting my Hero, which is what i did wrong.
Creating a new Google Account when you first set it up, is the way I got my market place to work, not signing in to an existing account.

I got mine here in Wellington from Digi Imports (Digi Parallel Imports in Auckland), I work there.

That's my problem, I can't go to market. When I browse the Market (using www) I can't find the More Locale App or the ability to download.

It does look impressive but there will always be a 'next best thing' and you have to jump sometime or you just end up dreaming and not doing.

With reference to 2.1, how will it arrive? and how do you go about installing it? My web searches show it has been released in the UK.

Thanks for the tip about More Locale, I eventually found it, manually downloaded and installed it. But I don't see, apart from the machine now saying en_NZ how that helps... Or am I missing the point and need to change it to en_UK or en_US or something?

Market is an app on your phone, you dont access it thru the web. Just go to All Programs and look for Market, its icon looks like a white shopping bag with the Google Android on it.

Yeah but on my particular phone (S.E.Asia model) there is no Market widget (not even in 'All Programs'), that's why I'm trying to find a way to get it installed. At this stage the only access is via the web and it doesn't allow downloads.

So I guess I need to ask if rooting and loading a custom ROM will get me access to the Market and its 20000 apps without losing some of the the widgets and apps I like on the phone as purchased (like pdf reader and Quickoffice, Google Maps, system control widgets and the clocks).

Sadly yes I am suggesting a complete reset.
I was frustrated with not being able to browse the market after turning it on, so I went and looked for a solution to it straight away with a reset and new account being that solution.

I truly hope that does work for you as it did me. I had the market icon but couldnt do anything, as it said that I had to confirm conditions to use of the market. My model from the sounds of it is the same as yours aswell.

If you want to root a hero so you can either flash a generic ROM or a custom one, then check this out:

It's fairly comprehensive, and as long as you take your time and carefully follow the instructions, it's very easy.

Most of the apps you've listed come as standard in the custom ROMs.

Thanks for the above. I have reviewed that site and similar. What scares me is the whole 'Gold Card' part of the procedure, and its possibility of producing a paperweight. Some of the threads mention losing functionality such as 3G, GPS etc. If I had realised I the S.E.Asian phone was "crippled", as one contributer put it, I may have thought twice about getting it.

Is there anyone (commercial or private) in Auckland (pref West) that has the know-how to help me with the downgrade-root-install procedure? I don't want to end up with a paperweight!

Edit: Just to update.. I was able to root and load a new ROM without having to do the goldcard bit. So I am now happily using the 2.73.405.5 build. I might venture into custom ROMs later. So disregard the above request for help.
