Telecom will need to do some upgrades as their current system doesn't support the newer MMS method that Android uses.

The HTC Legend and/or Desire would make a lot of sense for them if they can get compatible devices, the Desire blows the iPhone out of the water as far as functionality, although not so good for the technophobes.

I think it was discussed earlier in this thread that the HTC Desire, while desirable :-) wouldn't be the best choice for XT given it doesn't support WCDMA at 850

Eh? Whats that then?

Android MMS retrieval references an http site for a .XML capabilities file, it falls over when it tries to retrieve it whereas 2Degrees and Vodafone handle it just fine.

There's an FCC filing for north-america for the Legend which pretty much implies an 850Mhz version, not sure if the same applies to the Desire. Legend would be better than nothing, pretty similar to the Desire except for lower screen resolution (320x480 Vs 480x800) and slower CPU (600Mhz Vs. 1Ghz).

There's also a FCC filing for a slightly modified N1 that will apparently work on 3G for ATT and Rogers so that means WCDMA 850. That might be a more interesting choice.

According to the MoDaCo chap the bootloader in the new models (Desire/Legend) is locked meaning that they can't be rooted anywhere near as easily as the N1, means no custom ROM can be flashed onto it, which while not really a deal-breaker is another tick for the N1. IIRC the only behind the scenes difference with the N1 is that it has slightly less RAM than the Desire does.

An N1 would certainly be acceptable :)
