athor: So does the voice now pronounce things properly with the official nav?

And will this now work properly with brut nav? (so we can still have map caching)

Actually brut navigation doesn't cache anyway because it uses vector maps right? Only maps caches

The official word: yes, Google Navigation is available in Australia and New Zealand now.

Today, we’re launching Google Maps Navigation in Australia and New Zealand, which means getting to Hobart this year (and exploring along the way) just got a lot easier. Google Maps Navigation is a feature of Google Maps for Mobile that provides voice-guided turn by turn directions in real time. That means that instead of printing out your directions in advance, or having your co-pilot read aloud from list of directions, you can use your Android smartphone to guide you there directly.

Yeah there's a Google Maps Lab feature that mentions traffic labels as well. Hopefully won't be too long. I can imagine that being pretty handy - particularly in Christchurch where many of the main roads are still off-limits from earthquake damage!

Love the feature where as you arrive at your destination you get a street view!
The one thing that is still an issue for me is the low volume on my Nexus One, hard to hear with road noise even when piped thru my BT handsfree. Another Nav app I have used on the same phone has plenty of volume so the phone is capable, just not doing it right.
Anyone else have low volume issues?

You can load the Nav and switch off data and it still works.

+1

You can also tap the bar at the top, while navigating, where it shows the next turn to make, and it will show you the map of that turn, plus you can then get a streetview of the turn.

Actually 3 at work but not sure about 2 of them.

Working well here on my SGS, will take it for a proper road test tonight on the way to my night shift.

EDIT: Actually it might be a Market problem Artoo - Google pushed out one of their silent Market updates in the last 24 hours (saw it in Paul OBrians Twitter feed) and there are often troubles for a couple of days. I had an update to the Moron Test that failed to install today, and then the Market wasn't even showing it on my phone! Tried again and all was well. You can try in Manage applications to roll back the Market update and then see if Maps will install if it doesn't install over successive attempts.

Nice one. I got the 4.7 release pushed to my N1 but didn't really look to see what new features had been added. It's only when I read this post that I discovered that Navigation is now supported.

I am also now removing Brut Maps.

I just checked... I'm still on 4.6
So it's been enabled seperately from the update to 4.7

Hi NZTF. Both the Android Market app and AppBrain find the update OK and the downloads happen fine. It's the installation that dies in the arse unfortunately.

With "Allow automatic updating" ticked, a red warning appears under saying "A manual update is required". The description in he update screen mentions the new features and it allows ne to download but at the end of the install routine I get a red warning triangle with a note that says simply "Installation unsuccessful".

I don't see any option to roll back in either the Market App or AppBrain, so that doesn't appear to be an option.

So not sure what to try other than google it.

Maybe my battery is too low? - I've had that before, but it's a cr@pshoot.

If I figure this out, I'll post the fix as it might help some other unfortunate soul at least.

Thanks for the response.

Cheers,
R2D2

He's ba-aaack...

Hey all,

Got it installed finally. I doubt many others will have the issue, but this got me back on the air.

Re-installed Brut before uninstalling it with Titanium.
Re-flashed with Doc's JPO ROM.
Installed his app packs via CWM recovery.
On reboot, ran the std Maps app, which worked.
Used Android Market app to check downloads, and Maps update was visible as before.
Clicked update and got the successful installation notification.
Fired Navigation up and got the input screen, entered a destination and got the synth voice.
So as far as I can tell, that's me fully Google Maps equipped, with TBT and some other stuff.

So don't know what was causing the problem, but that was the fix for me. I had a decent look around the interwebs for others with the same issue, but nary a single mention that was specific to this update so I must've had a a dodgy ROM install.

All good now though.

And if anybody finds a text to speech engine that's better than the stock Picot, I'll be interested in a recommendation.

Cheers,
R2D2
