It seems to leave everything intact, but I didn't do the reset afterwards like it said to in the documentation. (Hence my question above :))

I've just done the update. Got it to work finally
I did the master clear so have to put everything back on that I saved.
It appears the reset clears the update folder from the main drive and gives you a clean slate to work with

After trying for a couple of days to update mine, this is how I did mine and the same way on a friends and it worked perfectly.

Save everything that you can onto your pc.
Do a Master Clear BEFORE doing the update.
Download a fresh udate file and follow the instuctions on the unzip and put the Garmin folder on to your SD or internal memory.
Follow the instructions for the update .
When finished do another master clear and your done.

As i say I did it this way on a friends Garmin and it worked first time.
