Cheers for all that. I got that program and ran it but turning off the security turned out to be a nightmare as I was not able to reconnect with the laptop until I turned it back on again. and with it off the phone still would not connect. I suppose it would help if I knew what I was doing, half the time I'm just guessing!! :)

Ok, now you've got the scanner you can tell us more about the ap.

What channel is it on? I know you've got it set to auto on the ap, but that only means that it scans the channels and picks what it thinks is best.

Unless there's a crowd of aps, I'd choose chan 6 as a nice safe middle of the road place to be and then push forward from there.

However, as you can't even connect to an open AP it might be time to take it back to the store and get them to prove that it will in fact connect to something.

(man I hope he bought it from a good retailer... I'm really not in the mood for anymore retail bashing this week! ;) )

pffft... welcome to my life and prob a good percentage of everyone else round here!  hang in there, we do get how frustrating this stuff is when it just doesn't work as expected and you end up having to learn a truck load more about it than you ever planned to :)

lol... I'm not sure the plan was for a geek to visit you and *bring* beer!

Ok, chan 4 should be ok... So we're pushing forward, that's good.

We still don't know if that phone will talk to an open ap. Where did you get it? Can you whip it back to them to just do a quick test and confirm the wifi is actually working ok?

The other option I'd try is grab another AP from DSE and test it out (remember they have a 14 day return policy, so if you figure it out you can just drop the AP back to them with a keg).

Im in tauranga area so too far away to help with free wifi spots but try going to a starbucks, macDonalds, and try doing a wifi search you could even try walking through your main shopping center and searching for wifi ( your phone can do this automatically ) and see if you get any results. once you get an open network just tap on that and see what happens ( even if your phone shows locked devices will mean the wifi is actually working at least picking up a signal ).

Have you tried yet to disable all wifi security on your AP ( for testing purposes ) and confirm your phone can pick up the signal if so press connect and log into your AP to see if your phone is listed there.

ok we have some succes, went to maccas and was able to connect to their wifi no problem so obviously there has to be an issue with the security on my network. should i turn on the "static ip"? and if so what do I put into all the new fields that opens up?

No, dont' turn on static ip. However is your router doing dhcp?

How are the other pcs on yur network doing ip? Are you using static ips on those?

D

Edit:  Good to see we're narrowing it down! :)

There are 2 ways your computer/phone/what ever can get an ip.

1. static - you choose the ip and type it in.
2. dynamic - your computer sends out a message to any dhcp server that's listening and asked for an IP address.

Most adsl/modem/routers/switch/wifiAP's have a 'dhcp server' built in.

On my network I have a dhcp server running which will give my phone an ip when it asks for one, but I also have some machines and bits of equipment set up with static addresses (normally servers and printers).

In your case I'm wondering if you've assigned your laptop an ip address manually and don't have a DHCP server running on your network. As you haven't told us much about your set up it's a bit hard to know...

However McD's will be running DHCP which is why you were able to make it work there.

ok I decided, against your advice, to use the static ip, so entered all the information and it connected but after a few minutes browsing (I couldn't connect to android market bty) the whole thing seemed to freeze up on me so I turned off the wifi and now I cant connect again even using static ip.

I'm beaten

think i'll go curl up in the corner now

Just out of interest what router are you using ?
If you are getting a connection then its dropping out you possibly have some settings slightly wrong but it sounds like you are nearly there.

Merry Xmas
