edge: ...As a matter of interest, I found thast even after I updated using this method, it still said I had an update available vis Kies.  I simply ignored it - and haven't bothered even expoloring why it is - I was just happy to have been running on 2.2!

That's because you are supposed to use the reg patcher again to disable spoofing after you get the update.

I see Telecom has still not released an official update of firmware to Android version 2.2 (or higher).  For standard users who don't wish to perform registry tweaks or download potentially risking firmware versions, this is pretty poor I feel.  (eg: through Kies)
My girlfriend has a Samsung Galaxy S 9000T, and due to a lot of new Apps requiring version 2.2 or newer, she is missing out on quite a bit - for example Adobe's recent release of the Flash player so she can view website videos easily.

I tried corresponding with Telecom about their future plans, but got nowhere.  If I had known that "if you want a new version of Android, you have to buy a new phone" was the philsophy being used, I would have steered her away from Telecom.

Any thoughts or information welcome...

JASON

I truly gave up on Telecom and Samsung, whoevers responsibility it is. After continually trying to get the update officially I just flashed a custom rom and haven't looked back, much better speed and stability than stock. There is a risk but the chances of completely killing your phone is next to none, but otherwise your just gonna have to wait it out(Unless of course you got the registry hack working)

i heard that telecom nz i9000 would go straight from 2.1 to 2.3 and they are now planning to skip the 2.2 update.

I tried further to convince my partner to let me use a manually down-loaded firmware, but she is in no doubt that she doesn't want me touching her phone, lol.

If that is true about jumping to version 2.3, then that would be good. Although I wonder if by that they mean 2.3.1 will be on the second generation series of Galaxy S 9000 - which I'm pretty sure it is coming with - and forget the first generation phone.....

Telecom have not been given anything to work with from Samsung as far as 2.2 goes.

I have been playing with the phone from Telecom and noticed it has Telecom customisations and tons of fluff from Samsung on it.

If I managed to hack the registry and get Kies to install the 2.2 update that is apparently out there, would it be just the native Samsung release (still with all the bloatware) but no Telecom branding?

Now I know why I like the Nexus One!

Ignore the Kies route and install a new ROM with Odin or via CWM. And if you like the N1, you will totally lurrrrve the SGS. :D Seriously, it's a great phone. I heartily recommend XXJPY (which is vanilla), but you'll need a recommendation for your CSC. I'm on VF so can't help you there. But there are heaps of peeps who can. Just ask...

come on people, "i hate telecom because they dont update my phone to 2.2" is a bit ignorant.

the lack of 2.2 on the i9000 is a global issue due to lack offficial release of firmware from samsung to global carriers. telecom isnt sitting on a copy of 2.2 going "nyah nyah" to piss you off. they got nothing like most of the world. the custom builds out there are from enthusuasts grabbing what they can, reworking and repackaging it to the best of their ability, and then releasing it for everyone to enjoy. nothings official and no ones a guaranteed pro, but there is some really good stable stuff out there to be found with minimal research effort.

if for some bizzare reason you want to have the telecom addons after installing a custom ROM on your phone, (and all that is is the default android browser renamed into "YxT World", a URL shortcut to "Your Telecom", and a fancy animated boot screen) then simply choose the TNZ CSC when building your rom.

no one buys android for a closed experience. its an open effort by enthusiasts everywhere - you have to be open to doing a little bit of work (in understanding custom roms and firmware, etc) to open a whole new world. if you wanted a perfect closed experience, you'd have gotten an iphone

kinda like buying a brand new lamborghini and then complaining you can only drive fwd and backward 2 ft in your garage because lambo didnt come to your house to open the garage door. walk to the door, unhook the lock, open the door, and my goodness, go for a blinken drive!!! :D

I'd disagree

i9000T on stock 2.1 is very laggy, and to expect people to have to spend quite a few hours reading up about custom roms is asking too much.  I think most customers wouldn't have the technical skills to install a custom rom.

I think that either it should of been less laggy before it was released or it should of already come up with a firmware upgrade via kies for the masses.

ok granted, stock 2.1 performance is debatable - mine ran fine stock, not 'fast', but not terribly slow.

my point is, its not Telecom who is calling the shots on 2.2/2.3 upgrade options, its samsung mobile. so playing the 'blame Telecom' wildcard is a bit ignorant.

But... If Telecom did the leg-work of finding the most stable firmware build and distributing it to their customers, isn't that the same as virus definition updates?  Surely better than every man and his dog giving it a go - it's not an efficient use of people's time, maybe that's why we are struggling as an economy: we are all dealing with firmware updates, instead of working productively, lol.
Most PC software and drivers have easily implemented updates, so why would your smartphone be any different?

theyve done that - 2.1 is the most stable deemed for that platform, taking into account every user possible, from extreme novices to enterprise solutions. how can they release a 2.2 version and call it stable when there is no official 2.2 from samsung for this market/region?

the reason individuals can repackage their own custom roms, is because they do it at 100% user risk - there is no liability for bugs and issues after the fact. its all unofficial and at your own risk. Telecom as a business cant release a product with no liability as much as any other business, that would be an even crazier move than sticking to 2.1 and supporting it after-sale.

It doesn't really matter who's fault it is, no matter who people complain too or blame it isn't going speed up any official update. So there are two options if you want to update, stay where you are and wait for an update on 2.1 and hope that an update whether it be 2.2 or 2.3 arrives shortly, or go the unofficial way and either use odin, a reg hack or root and install CWM to change to a new rom.

On 2.1 I found my phone extremely unstable, the screen randomly going black, restarting randomly and constant freezes not to mention very slow, but people may have different experiences and may be those experiences are good enough for 2.1 to be ok, who knows.
