Looks like 720p support is a hardware limitation after all, and not because of the stock Android as some people had claimed.

Wow that is pretty gay. Looks like the SGS is superior after all.

Seems that way. So far here are my thoughts:

Nexus S Pros:
- Stock Android 2.3 out of the box
- Curved Screen (well, it IS listed as a feature. Not sure how useful it actually is :-))
- NFC support

Galaxy S Pros:
- Cheaper
- 720p support
- Been in the wild a lot longer, so has a larger flashing ecosystem

I think NFC support will be largely useless in NZ for a long time. The appeal of stock Android 2.3 is very nice, however you do lose things such as media format support (MKV etc) that the Galaxy S has. If i was buying a phone right now I'd wait to see how the new dual core ones pan out before making a decision.

Possibly true, but this phone will also not be upgraded for a long time either probably. And considering NFC requires hardware support, I consider it a feature, even if it isn't one that is overly useful yet. And if the rumors of NFC support in the iPhone 5 is true, you can bet that Apple will be doing their best to mainstream the technology, which should increase the usefulness of that feature in the Nexus S.

Am I correct in thinking that you can source a reliable 2.3 ROM for the Galaxy S today if you wanted to?

Good point. I forgot about that one.

Won't the iPhone 5 be coming out middle of this year?

Rumored for a July launch, which if last years launch is anything to go by, means an October launch here (which may or may not be prepay phone user friendly). I had contemplated holding out for the iPhone 5, but that means I have to put up with my crappy V640i for possibly another 10 months or more.

Ah true that is a fair amount of time to wait. The Motorola Atrix is due to come out next month.

I've heard its name mentioned a bit, but haven't looked into it further. May warrant a bit of investigation, I feel.

That's unlikely as the spec for the SNS camera module appears to provide more than enough headroom for 720p. Even later posts in the thread you link to dismiss the linked post as incorrect. So the jury is still out on the subject. What we actually do know is that at this moment 720p is not available and if it's important to you, then the SNS is not going to be on your shopping list.

There was similar discussion about the SGS's ability to deliver stereo FM from its radio as it was mono-only under Eclair, with many learned peeps at XDA claiming it was hardware limited. And we know how that turned out.

So I'll watch this space with interest. Not that I'll be buying an SNS mind you, much as I coveted the one I tried a couple of weeks back. Darn them for excluding the external SD. :(

Cheers,

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new

I didn't unravel the thread that much, just far enough to see a tweet from a Google developer involved in the Nexus S firmware who stated that lack of 720p was due to a hardware limitation (chip missing when compared to the SGS).

720p isn't important to me that much, considering the Nexus S footage I've seen so far. What is more important is having a mic that will work effectively in loud environments (e.g. the Metallica concert I provided sample footage for :-)). It sounds like that may be overcome with a software update in future, and that devs are already working on this for the SGS, so that reassures me a little.

I'm still waiting for a fix for the noisy low light performance of the SGS's still camera function- at which point it'll be as close to perfect as I have a right to expect. But many here believe that it's hardware- so who can say. Guess I'll be waiting for that mythical perfect phone for a while yet. But I really like my SGS and I honestly can't think of any phone I'd rather have right now.

Cheers,

No. There is no reliable port of 2.3 for the Galaxy S. There is however Cyanogen Mod 7 which is 2.3 but still full of bugs. Wouldn't recommend as a "daily driver" though. I recommend you ask your question here in the main Galaxy S thread also. I know there are some GZ I9000 users on CM7 who can reply with their experiences.

If you're running the Voodoo Kernel, the associated audio control application has some mic gain settings, of which one is Loud enviroment. Would be interesting if anyone has made any concert or similar recordings with this setting.

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?
