I'm in the market for a new smartphone, and am having a hard time deciding whether I should go with a trusty old iPhone 4 (my wife has one, so I'm well aware of its capabilities and limitations), or get an Android device. Of the latter, my current frontrunners are the Nexus S or Galaxy S.

I've used my wifes iPhone to take video footage at a couple of concerts, and I was very impressed with the results (see my Paramore and Metallica clips as examples). I'm trying to get a feel for the quality of video capture of Android phones in a similar scenario, so I'm wondering if any fellow Geekzoners have any concert footage they can share with me. In particular, I'm interested in footage from the Nexus S or Galaxy S, although I am open to suggestions if other Android phones are deemed to be better. :-)

The Galaxy S is very bad at concerts and other noisy environments. There's something wrong with the auto gain control on the microphone so for any sound over a certain level it distorts badly and sounds dreadful.

Will find a video next week and put it up.

Galaxy S is terrible at concerts. All my BDO videos sound terrible. The bass just rapes the mic lol.

Supercurio was working on a mic gain fix for the SGS so any kernel with that fix should have better audio during concerts. I haven't had the opportunity to test it.

Ah! So it is possibly a problem with the software, rather than an inherent fault with the mic hardware? IOW, it could be overcome in the future?

I've also read that the lack of 720p recording support on the Nexus S may also be overcome with a future software revision. Do you know whether there is any truth to this? In all honesty, I find the Nexus S video to be acceptable, and its the poor audio quality in noisy environments that I'm more worried about. But it would be great to know if 720p may be possible, or whether this constraint is once again hardware related.

The Nexus S has the capability to record at 720p as it has the same hardware as the Galaxy S. I think it's likely that a creative hacker will release a method of recording in 720p in the future. The mic issues with the SGS are definitely related to the mic gain settings and not the hardware, the SGS has very powerful audio hardware in the Wolfson WM8994 chipset that it uses. @Supercurio is actually working with Samsung Engineers to come up with sound improvements that will be used in future official firmware builds. This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806195 might have details of the sound fix.

Thanks for the detailed reply, lokhor. Knowing that it isn't a hardware limitation goes a long way towards making me feel more comfortable about getting a Nexus S or Galaxy S instead of an iPhone 4 (unless others have a better suggestion, of course :-)).

Biggest problem is the mic, most loud music will just sound distorted even if the picture comes out nicely

Yeah just bear in mind that you need to be comfortable with flashing custom firmware (which is really not that scary once you understand it) if you go for the Galaxy S. If you want it all working fine out of the box then definitely go for iPhone 4 (or 5 depending on when you intend to buy). I just found the limitations on iOS too restrictive for my tastes.

My main concern with flashing custom firmware is ending up with a bricked phone. If you follow instructions to the letter, how common is this? Also bear in mind my primary machine is a Macbook Pro, and I'm guessing that most flashing software is probably Windows based (so will be running in a VM). Will this extra overhead cause problems? I've worked with hardware in the past where the flashing process can corrupt the destination device if the host OS is overtaxed.

Bricking an SGS is virtually impossible unless you flash the bootloader (which you should not be doing). The worst that can happen is a soft brick where you just have to reflash from Download mode.

I'm pretty sure there is a tool called Heimdall that allows you to flash using Mac OSX. I am unsure whether flashing in a VM is advised or even works. Once you do an initial flash of a kernel with ClockWorkmod Recovery you won't need anything else to flash as you can do it all from the phone anyway. I have flashed dozens of Roms using CWM and never broken my phone beyond repair, although I scared myself once soft bricking when I flashed without disabling the lag fix first.

Sounds cool. What is the current state of play WRT flashing tools and custom ROMS for the Nexus S. Do the tools for the Galaxy S apply here, or are handset specific ones required?

I'm unsure about the Nexus S, have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=880

Thanks. I'll stop bugging you now, and actually go do my own research :-)
