if you've had your XT connection live and connected since before you went in the store, then it should be easy to coinvince them that your intention was to purchase a compatible phone.... and they should have had enough clue to ask the question and provide you with the right model. I'd say go back and see how it goes.

Just cause a couple of months has passed doesnt mean that if they sold you something that doesnt work 'as described', that they can get out of righting the mistake...

does your invoice say "Vodafone", or just i9000? How would joe bloggs with zero clue necessarily look at the pre-order and know the difference?

It will say Samsung Galaxy i9000         VF, as he indicated it says VF on the receipt.

If all else fails, won't you be able to just custom ROM it for telecom, by installing an XT compatible modem?

And if you were going to custom ROM it anyway then I see no point loosing your nerves with DSE.

Installing a different rom or modem will not help him as the hardware is different 850 vs 900mhz.  No kinda of software hacks can change the hardware.

Good luck.

Bring proof that you had a telecom XT account at the time of the purchase and cross your fingers.  These sell for quite high on trademe (even 2nd hand) so you can probably get $550-700 selling it 2nd hand.  (When Galaxy S2 comes out then you wont get as much $$$)

SteveON: From my 2yr at DSE: Nothing can be done, if the phone you purchased matched the phone you have in your hand then your stuck... However if the receipt is for the phone you wanted; you'll have a story for the manager.

Particularly as the pre-order receipt specified VF.....that would have been the time to say something. Any later is too late.

don't worry, got something sorted out with xt, they are offering to send it to Samsung themselves to get it replaced.
