Doesn't the Defy only run Android 2.1?

Interesting, my Defy, on Voda, is running 2.1. There is an update scheduled for second quarter of this year which makes it June.

The NZ Motorola site says:

Android Éclair 2.2 with enhanced MOTOBLUR

But my understanding is that 'Eclair' is the nickname for 2.1 and 'Freyo' is 2.2.

I am interested in any info on a possible update as 2.1 doesn't run Flash Vid in the browser but 2.2 does which mean you can watch on demand TV on your phone.

Anyway, like I said, 'interesting'.

crackrdbycracku.

A couple more questions as I've downloaded the user guide from the Telecom web site and would like a couple of clarifications as I come from a Samsung Android background but I assume then Defy would be the same.

1. GPS. Have you loaded the text to speech prompts and does it do Turn by Turn spoken navigation in navigation mode??
2. I assume that when you are sending email or SMS that when you rotate from portrait to landscape mode the keypad rotates as well?? Can't find any mention of this in the UG..

Thanx in advance..

To get the phone to tell you how to get where you want to go you can either speak or type a destination, I find typing a bit easier. It then gives you turn by turn spoken directions. This is all out of the box, no set up needed

Sure can, also comes pre-loaded with Swype, I'm not a kid anymore it it's still easy.

One thing I am going to contact Motorola about is that it is running Android 2.1, I heard there was an update in the pipe but I wasn't expecting it till June. Now the boards and the Moto site say they are running 2.2 but I have checked for firmware updates on the phone with no joy. No a deal breaker but Flash Video in the browser would be nice.

Any info would be greatly apprciated.

Jack

Thanx for the info. I suspect that there is an update for the Defy to 2.2 as that's what the Telecom ones are and carriers are not usually fast at doing these things... even with new products....

I had a bit of a play around with the Telecom Defy and I must say it's not a bad phone. It's Android 2.2.2 with Motoblur.

If you are into your social networking sites, and need a underwater camera (I wouldn't recommend it) then this is possibly the phone for you.

The screen resolution also appears to be pretty nice.

Yep, it should be in stores today. Here is the press release:

Motorola DEFY is a slim, pocketable Android smartphone that comes equipped with advanced web browsing capabilities and a 3.7” high-resolution touch screen display that provides edge-to-edge views of your favorite photos, videos and websites.

The Motorola DEFY will be available exclusively on Telecom NZ from 28 April 2011. The device will retail at $799 RRP and be available online at Telecom Mobile Store or through Telecom stores and dealers.

“DEFY has been designed to handle everything an adventurous life in New Zealand can throw your way,” said Timo Brouwer, Managing Director, Motorola ANZ and South Pacific.  “With all the features consumers expect in a smartphone, DEFY packs advanced web browsing, entertainment and messaging capabilities, to keep you entertained now the nights are drawing in, as well as a design that withstands the challenges of everyday life.”

Telecom Chief Marketing Officer, Kieren Cooney notes the Defy is a good example of the kind of device that Telecom’s XT network was built for: "With XT, we've invested heavily to build New Zealand's smartphone network - empowering Kiwi’s to take the internet with them wherever they go.  The Defy is the perfect partner for this, as now you can take the internet with you, even into places where there's a bit of rough and tumble.”

Motorola DEFY is water, dust and scratch resistant, protecting you from life’s little challenges like some unexpected drizzle or spilt drink – the DEFY can keep up with whatever you want to do, whether that’s mountain biking the St James cycle trail or sailing on Auckland harbour.  It also features a large, resilient display that has outstanding protection against scratch damage. CrystalTalk PLUS vanquishes noisy environments with two microphones which intelligently filter out background noise and amplify your voice, so you don't have to shout.

Motorola DEFY features the latest version of Motorola’s MOTOBLUR, which makes it even easier to manage all of your emails, messages and social updates in one easy place with the additions of filtering, resizable widgets, added corporate security and a versatile battery manager.

An Adobe® Flash® 10.1 enabled browser and 3.7” WVGA screen allow users to view more of the Web than standard browsers. Create your own entertainment with the 5-megapixel camera with flash, digital zoom and auto focus that lets users capture the best of their social life.

Motorola DEFY also acts as a 3G mobile hotspot1 to connect up to five WiFi® enabled devices, enabling a mobile hub of productivity. DEFY is Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-enabled to stream, store and share content with compatible devices around the home like HDTVs, game consoles and PCs.

The Connected Music Player brings lyrics for the songs stored on your phone and enables you to discover, buy and download music. Choose from over 100,000 applications, widgets and games from Android Market and enjoy access to Google services including Google Search, Google Maps and Gmail.

Hi,

This is an update to my continuing Android update odessy with my much loved Defy.

First, I heard that the phone runs Android 2.1 but update was due 'around June'. So, I figured not a big deal, I can wait for that.

Then, I see the posts on here about the Telecom version running 2.2 and mine runs 2.1. I want Flash and all but I am not wanting to root and possibly 'brick' my phone.

So, I checked for updates in the in-phone menu and it says I am up to date, no update here.

Then emailed Motorola and got an email back saying:

To get the Froyo 2.2 software update, go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Update to begin the Over-The-Air software upgrade process.

So I go to try this and my phone told me it was up to date and there are no updates.

So I just called the 'help line' and talked to a really nice guy who told me there is an update in the pipe but there is no release date so far. There for sure isn't one available now.

Now, I am not really high with the care factor on this. The only thing I really want Froyo for is watching Sons of Anarchy on TV3 On Demand (love that show, but the missus doesn't) and I can do that on my computer and watching video drains the battery, small screen... [y'all know the rest of that song]

But I am posting this so that if you are buying one of these phones because it is running 2.2 then be really careful to make them show you Flash Video playing on the browser before you part with your hard earned. My reading of the Telecom press release does not say which version it is running although it does make reference to Flash 10.1.

It may be my phone, it may be because Voda don't sell them and I bought it off the web, it may be something completly different. Like I said: 'care factor low'. But if this is a deal breaker, be careful.

And, I really like my phone. It rocks.

Anyway, I am off to quote the email Motorola sent me back to them in thier customer satisfaction survey.

Stay safe y'all.

Jack

I received a Motorola Defy here today, and it's running Android 2.2... This is a Telecom XT handset.

Very light! And impressive with the screen responsiveness. Now to play with it.
