KennyM: i just seen this tread and decided to download it, i see on the main page on the google market it says it uses tomtom maps (i didnt really read much, but stood out while scrolling)

Please let us know your experience of it:)

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Looking at their website they only do limited maps for aus/nz

Australia Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney
New Zealand Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington

As a previous owner of an iPhone I had the TomTom GPS app installed which was brilliant. I have just switched to a Galaxy S2 which so far has exceeded my expectations. My only problem is looking for a GPS app with support for New Zealand that doesn't eat through my data each month. (I.e the maps are stored on the device)

Hopefully someone here knows of such an app :)

As a Galaxy S2 owner, you should be able to use the Navigon Navigator app which is a Samsung subsidised freebie. It downloads NZ and Oz maps to your phone via wifi so won't use your data. Very good app and the price is right.

Caveat: You'll need to use MarketEnabler to spoof an Aussie carrier to install and update, as the app is intended for the Oz market, and in order to run ME, you'll need to root your phone.

That said, it's very much a "best of breed" application, with NZ accented turn-by-turn directions, lane assist and POI info included.

It's a good idea to install the Svox app to provide alternatives to the rather robotic Android "Pico" stock voice synthesizer regardless of the nav app you finally use. There are many voice packs to choose from including 'novelty' accented English, and the voice packs are a only couple of bucks each.

Did I mention that Navigon is free?

So I d/l it had a look. Seems it does other areas as well.
Will test it out on the way home tonight. At first glance it looks a lot harder than google to use.

I see their website says cost from Euro9.99. What does it cost you for NZ/Oz navigation?

So in other words, if you are rural, there's no mapping? That's quite a downer for road trips.

Nah it looks to do other areas. I'm in Nelson and thats in there.

I've downloaded Sygic from the market and installed the NZ Maps. It then allows me to select various options such as the voice and language, then asks for an email address and password and then a product activation key. Without the key you can't do anything. I thought there was a 7 day trial period before you needed to activate?

Just choose not to do that. should work fine
it will ask if you want to activate every time
Do you get the go on line option?

I gave it a test last night and I really like it. I will pay the fee to use it all the time.

Whenever I launch Sygic it goes straight to a "Product Information" screen which lists "Sygic GPS Navigation" with a "Product not activated" status. The only options I have are to Quit or select that product. If I do that I get options to Activate or Cancel. I've tried reinstalling and the same happens.
