Had a look at one in the Vodofone store today, nice video and fast responsive touch.  I believe I should be able to get it to push media to my samsung tv, but could not find any pre-loaded apps for this, in fact it did not seem to have very much preloaded content at all.  I guess some people would say that is a good thing, but it seemed a bit vacant.

So what is up with no USB port, will there be an adapter for that many-pinned proprietary looking interface?

And does it take a SD card?

I think you are referring to the 10.1V? I see Noel Leeming has removed the 10.1V from their website.

USB and SD card - you will need to wait for the proprietary add-ons in the coming months.

Have had a small change of heart. Been playing with my friends iPad2 and haven't been particularly overwhelmed by it. With pretty much the same technology in the 10.1 working under a slower(currently) operating system I think it will make sense to wait until someone finally makes a piece of kit that is actually better than what apple make rather than just equal it.

So, think I'm going to wait for the Kal-El quad cores to arrive. Hopefully Samsung are timely with their release, but if not ASUS will be. By then Honeycomb would have improved or Icecream will be levels above plus the technology will be heaps better than what is available now.

Also because the anandtech review recommended waiting.

*bump*

I have a friend going to Portland, Oregon (Tax free state) and he's going to get one of these when he is over there.

Upon returning to New Zealand, what allowances does he have when bringing it back into the country? Is there a dollar value on the item for him to have to pay NZ tax on it or is it just allowed because it's for personal use?

If he brings back say, half a dozen, it might be noticed. But if he is only purchasing a couple, he's got nothing to be worried about really.

Customs don't check that rigorously here.

Hi,

New to this forum here.

I got the Tab 10.1 here. Anyone has it that is having the 3.0.x version instead of the sought after 3.1 OS? Just wondering if there is a way to get it to upgrade.

Cheers.

Welcome to Geekzone. First of all, may I ask where you got yours from, and is it the 3G version?

The upgrade to 3.1 will come out progressively so you shouldn't have to wait too much longer.

I am thinking whether to get the 10.1V instead - slightly thicker but with a better camera vs the 10.1. Thoughts?

With netbooks now selling for around the $400 mark is it worth paying close to twice the price for a device without a keyboard and only about 64GB of storage?

Does anybody have any ideas on the comparison? Or am I comparing apples and oranges?

Just wondering as I am currently looking at my 'computing mix' so to speak.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

Tablets are more popular at the moment than netbooks as it's an "instant on" device. There's no need to wait for it to start up, plus, it can be taken anywhere and everywhere conveniently.

I wouldn't say tablets can substitute computers. It's more for content consumption than anything else.

My wife ordered it sometime ago via a store something like digi mobile (something like that). When it arrived she think it is too big for her so I 'borrowed to test' for her ;) It is definitely a 3G version as I am using a 2 Deg SIM and it works fine.

I am not sure which version is ours. It just have the model GT-P7100 on it. Vodafone logo is on it too. Possibly import from Australia. It does have a 8MP camera printed on the back. Hope this is the newer model?

Anyway have been playing a little for a few days and I think the current OS is rather unstable? Have to restart the system to factory default twice so far. I think a lot of apps are not ready to work with 3.0. A good example is the newly released facebook 1.6. It just will not install from the A. Market.

Anyway will continue playing with it. Any Q's feel free to ask.

Cheers.

Hi Lord007,

Looks like you have the Samsung Tablet 10.1V, and it is the Vodafone version.

The difference between the 10.1V and the 10.1 that's due in the country soon is the camera (8mp in the 10.1V vs 3mp) and the 10.1V is slightly thicker.

I am not to fussed about the thickness. It's already very light to me when I had a play at Noel Leeming a couple of weeks back.

Questions if you don't mind me asking:
1) How much did you get it for?
2) What is the battery life like?
3) Do you know whether it is XT compatible?
4) What external connections are there?

Thanks.

heavenlywild,

1) Not sure about this. Wife's company paid most of it. I think she paid 3-400?

2) Battery is pretty good. First few days it feels like it is taking quite a lot of power because I had wi-fi on all the time. It lasted around 2 days. Once I figured out to turn off wifi when using 3G it goes on to 3-4 days ++. Let's just say that I spend just 2-3 hours per night doing light surfing, email and messaging and I have never ran out of power because had plenty to time to recharge it in between usage. 6860mAh.

3) Don't have a telecom SIM to test but it is stated on the box their HSPA+ frequency 850/900/1900/2100MHz. EDGE 850/900/1800/1900. Hopefully telecom is using one of them?

4) Nothing. Just a USB cable that goes to a PC to transfer music/movie etc. Proprietary connector on the tablet side. This acts as the charger as well. Oh yes and a so-so quality headphone.

Thanks mate for your response.

1) The device retails for over $1000 here in NZ, so I don't think it will be around the $300-$400 mark.

2) Good to hear battery life is decent!

3) I think from what you have said, it will support XT!

4) I think the add-ons will be available in the coming months to support HDMI and SD cards.

Any negatives to the device so far? And how does it compare to say, the Acer Iconia, if you have seen one in-stores?
