I think that the android message is slowly getting through but agree that it is the Apple marketing that people see and lets face it for the price the Iphone isn't that good compared to some of the android offerings however to put it into perspective there are many more companies using android on their phones so it is only a matter of time before android is the majority, like it or not.

I think Telecom is doing a good job of marketing android but that may change now they have access to Iphone.

I'm sure the Android message will filter through.

This appears to be a less than well received Android app, but it is for ANZ banking.. I'm missing something here.. right?

I have the BNZ banking app which is 'fit for purpose', mPass AirNZ, TeeVoid(NZ TV guide with reminders...cool), Vodafone does quite a nice 'My Account' widget.

On my list, as noted by kyhwana2 a Metservice Android app would be well received.

Is there a NZ election/Parliament app, with standing members, seats held, seats won/lost, party gains/losses, trend/swings and etc...

Just like World Ruby Android app, with stars, team breakdown, players and games won/lost.
Feel the excitement build for a win in epsom.... marvel as a PM takes tea and who is that man in Tauranga.

Along with all the other apps that I don't know I need, but probably couldn't live without when they become available.

I guess NFC should get some creative juices flowing.

Oh Yes, nearly forgot. The US military is looking to approved the use of Android devices. So expect to see Scud missile tracking and thermal tracking apps real soon.

I agree on other apps though. Especially with ANZ it is annoying, until recently they didnt even have a mobile site and their normal site had heaps of issue on mobile devices. As they finally released the IOS app I changed to Android and still couldnt do mobile banking. I moved my main accounts now to ASB their mobile site is so good they dont even needed an app but they still provide one for Android.

I dont think the issue is Android vs Apple popularity. In fact by virtue of Androids multiple phone types , and wide price range, Android is or should be pulling more market share.

From what I have read, the issue is fragmentation, there are so many screen sizes and manufacturers with varying versions of the OS, customsed for the manufacturer. Google is working on that, so when there is a narrow number of versionsof the OS x phone size and the manufacturers version of their addons are more of an overlay, that should resolve the fragmentation issue. Apple has one OS in that iOS4 and 5 will accept the same apps, and only two screen sizes.

Certainly a company such as Sky, and any others that only have an iOS app arent doing that because of Apples demands. They will want as many of the population using the app, the issue appears to be the difficuty in providing many Android versions to cover all phones, screen sizes and manufacturers own OS version

Dominos is marketing their android app pretty heavily

Also my dads work is currently upgrading employees work phones from the Nokia 3120C (which they only got around 6 months ago) to im not sure what but its probably something Android based

Kiwipixter: I am not surprised as most companies don't have the resources to support multiple platforms. However, im confused to why Trademe, a very well resourced company, doesn't support Android yet.

They have an API and there are several apps for TradeMe including TradeDroid Pro which is simply fantastic.

Blame the media as well, before 2-3 months ago it was always iPhone, now they refer to "smartphones" not "iPhones"

with the iphone you only develop for 2 devices (4s and 4) whereas with android you have 100s of handsets all with different hardware and running different versions of android, also ios users have big pockets... dunno about the last one

Correction (IMHO)

There are only two Apple iOS versions, as apps run on 4 and 5. iOS on 3.5" iPhone and iOS on 9.7" iPad. Much easier to create an app.

Google are working on resolving the fragmentation issue, so that will be good for Android users, when they can upgrade when a new version is out, without being hamstrung by the manufacturer desire to provide an update. Yes, you can root the device, but most consumers are not capable of that.

iOS users can't be demographed into having deep pockets. Many really cool $1000 plus phones are Android or WP7, and I am sure there are many Galaxy 1 and 2 users on here which fit into that category, i.e. purchased at $1000+

They are all good platforms, with points of difference, it is simple as that. Whatever ticks the boxes that matter to you.

I emailed Metservice recently offering to make an Android App, and offer it for free just so I could get a decent weather forecast than the stupid one you get on the Android. All I needed was the API that the iphone uses. They never replied......

I emailed Sky about their Android app they have been developing since April. The answer:

this is still under development and no dates have been confirmed to date.

I would have thought the UK Sky+ android app would have been an easy port or even the Foxtel Android app. Maybe I should give them their phone numbers.... Oh that's right they are part of the same group...

Having seen that in another thread there is a mobile version, with sub city links http://m.metservice.com/ I'll make an app up that can be a widget and give the temp from that :-) I'll make a post when its done.

can do that on WP7 too, but an app with a live tile (or tiles) that updates with the current weather forecast is much better than a dumb link to a web page. I hardly ever open my weather app because all the info i need is on the start menu..
