Kraven: I got one of these (Herotab C8)

Yeah the Herotab and Dropad units appear to be basically the same device. That was the original unit I was looking at off Deal Extreme above. Seems to have solid reviews.

Just had the chance to have a play with the V9 tablet. Picture quality was good and seemed ok responsive wize, but man that screen is a no go having gotten used to the capacitive type.

I see the S7 Slim is now a whopping $499 at the warehouse. Stink.
- Great deal for anyone who got one at $199 though!

No it doesn't include shipping.

Like Ebay in US, Taobao is the most popular shopping website in China. But international buyers can't direactly purchase from Taobao. Just like Amazon, some sellers don't deliver the goods to NZ. Taobao doesn't accept International payment. You can either ask your chinese friends to purchase stuffs for you and mail to NZ or through some agencies to process deals. There are two agencies you can check them out:
1. http://en.choobuy.com 2. http://taobaofocus.com/order/taobao-shipping-fees-calculator. I have checked these two websites through chinese 'google' Baidu , they seem reliable. If you seriously want to purchase something from Taobao, you also need to find out which sellers are reliable and trustworthy.

missed out on the cheap touchpad, missed out on the s7 slim, man i suck.

so ordered a ainol novo7 with iCS from:

it seems to be a pandawill version with no camera's or hdmi out but that doesn't really bother me.

they say shipping on jan 5th.

i was going to wait for the advanced version but looks like the basic mips version will run everything i want except one app and i'd like ICS to test my apps on.

Yeah the mips thing seems to be the hold up on that particular ainol model.

The promise of Android 4.0 makes these pretty attractive over similar spec units running only 2.2 etc. Newer is better right?!...

For me the hdmi and camera's would be nice, but agreed, I'm actually close to not needing the hdmi at all and would prefer a real size USB port as a trade off. The camera's are fairly important IF skype can be made to run on it. Rear facing is probably not as important as front facing. I thought the novo 7 basic did have cameras but they have some alternative cheaper version as you say which has no comms ports/cameras etc at all.

Was kinda hoping the Warehouse might run another New Years special on the Slim S7 but honestly I'm not feeling it at this stage.... Let us know how you get on with your purchase though, to keep this thread current and useful for all.

Those Chinese tablets are rubbish, my brother bought one cause he saw my transformer and decided he wanted one, he know uses it for a mug coaster, total rubbish man..

Have to agree, I brought a WM8650 for my son and he loved it for the first week now just complains about the buggy software and substantial lag of the device, wifi is weak, skype doesn't work, youtube won't play half the videos - all in all not worth the hassle.

Unscientific review of ainol novo 8 bought from digitaltek.

Primary reasons for purchase - getting a sore back hunched over laptop. Want to be able to play browser flash such as tvnz on demand while the missus is monopolising the telly. Light browsing. Android games for the kids.

Flash in browser seems to be one of the most common challenging usages of these tablets, and this one handles it ok with regular process weeding. However only about 60% of youtube videos will play, which is fairly pathetic. Android market is accessible but it looks like quite a few developers have not ticked "compatible with all devices" when uploading their apps (effectively meaning that nearly all the cheap chinese beasties miss out), so some time wasted searching for apks.

One downside of a no-name device is lack of support by cyanogen etc - so stuck with the poor stock roms or brick-risking betas.

Some weirdness in the apps e.g. exchange account appointments show up in the calendar but google ones dont(!?!?). Not too worried about this as not using tab for personal/work productivity.

Battery life is shocking but i didn't anticipate this to be a problem with my sofa usage scenario. However the kids have strained the power lead and the plug now needs to be held onto the tablet with a rubber band to charge it. In hindsight, better to use it unplugged and take recharge breaks rather than trying to continuously charge.

The friendly digitaltek guy almost lost the sale by gabbling on excitedly about all the cooler, better, cheaper tablets he would be importing in the next few months. Lucky for him i had a dead laptop situation which required immediate action.

All in all, satisfied (but hardly thrilled) with the experience for basic usage.

A time-poor geek is hardly a geek at all
