Hi,

I'm looking at a tablet under $200 NZ.

Ainol, (yep you read that right...), have a new 7" tablet out that's pitched at $99 US and runs Android 4.0
It's got everything I need, 1GHz processor, front and rear camera, capacitive screen, hdmi, usb, wifi. Just not entirely sure about a legit Android Market but we can all hope.

Also spotted the 'Dropad' A8 (seriously China, who names these things?). Also referred to as a Herotab C8. Seems to be very well supported on youtube, no GPS or 3G but I'm ok with that, though the GPS would be cool. details here

Locally that is the Cruz at say $229, Capacitive, not sure on camera's or Android market.

Or the V9 at $199 which is resistive, but packs 3G and GPS in there too. Both are 600 MHz processors from memory. details here

Both the local options are lower power for more cost than you could get one sent from overseas. Huge less risk though of course if you buy local, just how much does that reduced risk cost you in $ terms. Great info on both of the above units in this dicussion. geekzone.co.nz

No idea of Android Market ability etc. I'm not up with the play on this, but as I understand it you still need to get this going from within the device, ie can't download apps elsewhere and transfer to a non android marketing device?

Any ideas/comments/experience/what out for ideas etc with these cheaper units?

Telecom Tab V9 screen is awful to use. Occaisional use machine at best. I dont really like mine.

You might be able to get a good deal on a second hand Asus Transformer when the prime comes out. I'm not selling mine, it's plenty fast and cost me quite a bit not so long ago.

Ainol Novo 7" Advanced

I ordered this tablet on Monday evening from a store called Shenzen Eternal Team via the Aliexpress portal. Paid a bit extra for expedited delivery and received around 12pm in Auckland today (Friday). Total cost NZ$197.09.

Have not been able to do much with it at work. Will be sorting out firmware and full market access, etc this evening. There is a good community at Slatedroid and Tabletrepublic. This device has a strong following on the Whirlpool forums as well.

First impression of build quality not the best - screen does not appear to be firmly attached (slight lift at top right when in held in widescreen view).

It did come with a NZ power converter.

If you are buying through Aliexpress search via google for a coupon code - I was hasty and missed the US$10 discount. Also, be sure to select a reputable and long established supplier.

Note that manufacture of the advanced model has been discontinued by Ainol, speculation is mounting about the successor slated for Feb/Mar 2012 release. So, you need to be sure that the seller has the device in stock before you purchase. The best know (merrimobiles and pandawill) are out of stock. Apparently, a final batch of 1,000 units is to be (has been) produced soon and not every seller may get stock.

At the $200 price point, I think RAM (512MB on the Novo 7 advanced) and GPU (Mali 400) are the key specs to consider when comparing the different tablets out there. There ar a few other models with better screens but are lacking in other respects.

China's plug pin is the same as NZ/AUS (upside down) but the pins are thinner, they can bounce around/ possibly fall out of a bit in a NZ plug,

Apparently this Chinese word is pronounced "I Nor" - but it appears that about 50% of initial posts in most forums focus on the name rather than the actual device.

It's an adaptor actually, it does nothing more than allow the straight pins of the power supply to fit into NZ sockets. It has fit snugly with no play.

It's an adaptor actually, it does nothing more than allow the straight pins of the power supply to fit into NZ sockets. It has fit snugly with no play.

is it one of the dangerous beige ones? Might want to get a legit travel adapter or better still a legit power supply since the US parallel pins are blatantly dangerous and I wouldn't even want to use them on 12V DC to be honest.

They are total junk, sorry to say. The resistive screen is terrible. Makes it worse than the specs make out, even a china made capacitive touchscreen feels nicer than it

I'd take this over it:

How cute is this thing, don't cha just want one?!

Spec wise it's looking pretty good, on a par/better the dropad type thing and the basic anal models, and available here locally in NZ etc. If it's genuine Android Market equipped etc then I think I have my winner.

It appears to be GPS equipped etc, all the things the V9 has, plus capacitive and faster 1GHz processor and it's a phone too! specs here Sold out online but may be available in stores?

Is this soley suited for Telecom XT though?

(Checked out the Cruz at Warehouse Stationary today and it seemed dull and slow, but it was the quickest of plays so I don't know how accurate that summary is.)

This is an excellent device at $200. Have not updated firmware as yet since it came with market installed and was able to find Skype on the market as well. It can run most games (failed with a few HD titles). NFS Shift and Angry Birds play very well. Am using MX Player for video playback, although it has also failed with two .mkv files while accepting other .mkv files. I still need to identify that video format which it cannot play. I will update eventually to get remote working and a few other non-essential fixes.

Also using Kindle reader, Comic viewer, Read it later and a few other games regularly.

One serious flaw is that it's not usable outdoors. Screen visibility is very poor. Lifting screen issue is not really a problem - just pushed it down firmly and it stays down for a while.

So far, as a diversion for the kids, it has been very useful. 3G would be great to have. I'm happy with the device I have.

I was about to pick one up yesterday, but got an XBox instead, was still in stock at my local here in Wellington at around 7pm

It is 850/2100 3G so yeah mostly suited to XT, but has the usual 3 GSM/Edge bands, so would work fine on GSM/Edge on Vodafone/2Degrees where there aren't many 2100 towers

Looks as though a few modders are trying to bring the Huawei Media(7" slightly thinner tablet) ROM to this, fingers crossed it happens soon

I got one of these (Herotab C8) just before Xmas, basically was just looking for something that the wife could play games on. No complaints from her so far!
