fe31nz:
And I object to Google trying to prevent me from using my property any way I choose to. I own it, not them. If I want to root it, they should just make a sensible path for me to do that. There are plenty of people who say that having a rooted device is a big security problem - but they seem to not bother to provide any proof of that.
Surely they have to comply with some kind of standard which is the reason the root is so critical? I mean I do my banking on my phone, what implications are there for those with rooted devices and will any bank trust a device that has been rooted?
Do you feel you should have unfettered access to your car's ECU as well? Ironically I do on my project car, but it is thirty years old and has virtually no safety features.
I've been looking at the Pixel, but I'm not prepared to jump through any hoops getting it to work as Maxine pointed out above. Life is too short. I just want another LG but they've stopped making them :(
As SBiddle also pointed out, it's a woeful time to be considering a new Android phone.
No reason given, just the stock 'price match declined and they're unable to accept' spiel.
I'll be very interested to see if they actually ship from within NZ, and if it comes from Australia will it attract duty and GST when it arrives. Makes no sense for Kogan/Mightyape to have them in NZ but retail them in an Australian store but not NZ store.

MaxineN:
It's well hidden in the system's efs partition(this is the case with all android phones these days). That's locked away under root.
No it isn't hard if Google wanted to add all 3 carriers to that configuration file and away we'd go(of course carriers would want to test this and make sure it's actually working).
It might be possible if they haven't locked away USB settings (dial *#0808# on exynos devices, also that calling code needs to be there) otherwise you may need a root ADB shell to open up RNDIS ACM DM under ADB. You also need to know how to use ShannonDM to do anything, oh you also need a license.
Either way you're probably going to need root to do it yourself but you're going to need the exact settings and you could also brick your device in the process. It also might not even be stable.
This isn't meant to scare you but this is a lot for one user to do.
So we may see it when the Pixel 10 is released??

They do have it for sale on the NZ site, people are just trying to get it for the AU RRP which is about $400 less than NZ MightyApe’s marked up price
Ahh I see, sorry.

Ramblings from a mysterious lady who's into tech. Warning I may often create zingers.

The argument that banking apps are vulnerable to a root account has always mystified me. Any sane banking app will be storing everything it can on the bank's systems, not locally, and anything it has to store locally should be properly encrypted. So a root account could read the files, but without any ability to decrypt them they would just be random numbers. But if the banking app started doing silly things and making the phone unusable, I would want to be able to delete its files if necessary.
Yes, I do think I should be able to access my car's electronics - I own it. Cars are a little different from mobile phones though - if I were to modify my car electronics, then like any other modification I might do to a car, I would need to get it certified before it would be legal to drive it on the road. But as I am an embedded programmer, I do know what I am doing with things like car electronics, and just how dangerous any modifications could be, so I am not a good example for that.
Any tips on where to get Pixel 6 Pro cases and screen protectors.
I ordered from www.mobilefun.co.nz only to find that they are a front for www.mobilefun.co.uk - still waiting.
I am really tempted to get the 6 or 5a... Maybe even shipping from US with Black Friday pricing because ends up still being hundreds of dollars cheaper as warranty with these other companies often tend to be an uphill battle.
Like realistically there is never a point when I really need 5G speeds for anything especially in areas which would already have access to city wifi and other things.
Do you think eventually these carrier will enable the Volte etc ?
One thing I like about Google is stock android experience and that the phones are designed for that. Also you pretty much get OS and security updates before most other phone manufacturers which in a way makes it worth forgoing 5g for.
Anyone order their phone directly from the Google US store and used a service like YouShop to get theirs?
