Standard firmware. There are no updates available, everything is up-to-date. No new apps were recently added. No changes were made to any settings.

Possibly a faulty battery or charger? If it happens again I'd try another charger first if you have one.

I've talked to Samsung and the phone has to go in for repairs. They say that although it might not take quite as long, to allow 14 working days for it to come back. This apparently may take longer depending on what they find.

I'm not happy :-(

Well I am sorry to here you are having issues, on a positive note, JB replaced by swap, my S3, and the new ones wireless is excellent and my battery life is about 2.5 days old now.

I would go back to you retailer rather than Samsung and see if they will swap it instead.

What Kernels are people running, I am currently running Abyss on Wanamlite but it seems a little jerky compared to Wanams own built in kernal, possibly due to his power saving features.

I am pretty close now to considering a move to custom ROM. I liked Wanam for the S2. I also would be interested in a ROM and Kernel recommendation.

Could someone please clarify something for me. I see people talking about "ROMs", "customs", "kernels". Are these all the same thing (i.e. a customised ROM such as CyanogenMod)?

I am running the stock Kernel but with the SUPERNEXUS Jelly Bean Build 2 ROM. It is AMAZING.

Basically turns your phone into a nexus running the latest JellyBean OS.

Personally I turned to android from using the new Nexus 7 table and couldn't stand the stock S3 ROM. I am much happier with the Jelly Bean look and function

Thanks for that, it explains things a bit better.

So it's possible to replace just the kernel, so long as it was designed to work with your specific ROM. And it's possible to replace just the ROM, but again it has to have been designed to work with your specific kernel.

Am I correct in thinking that most ROMs come with their own kernel, so you don't have the headache of matching the two up?

Yeah a ROM will have a kernel with it as it is a complete image of the operating system.

Definitely get that its not easy to just jump straight into it. Considering it is tinkering with a very expensive little computer

You got it Murray. ROMS come with a kernel which you can replace, so as long as the ROM supports kernel then you can flash just the kernel into your ROM.
