jesteraero: When I asked 2degrees they said as long as the bands are supported it will work

This is the usual Telco answer and applies to many phones before 5G and VoLTE turned up.

Even so, Pixel 5G and VoLTE appears to be extra special. As far as anyone can work out - it appears Google are not enabling these features except on a very short published list of telcos Google is working with directly.

This does not make a lot of sense to me. I recall there were some shenanigans with Apple and NZ telcos not allowing data for iPhone years ago. I can only say if there's some desire to preserve exclusivity then please start retailing the devices here...

If the criteria is that Telco must support 5G and VoWifi at the same time then umm... we are doomed..🤣

Just stuck a 2D sim card into my Pixel 4XL. No way to enable VoLTE on the phone settings and a check shows it cannot be enabled.

It says you have LTE voice. Does the main signal indicator stay on 4G/LTE when you make a voice call?

That just means that there's a voice circuit ready.

You really want to check IMS status (3 dots top right and hit IMS service status)

Here's from a Poco F3.

They all say unavailable and if I make a call the call indicator goes to 3G

If Google decides to update this for Pixel will the required carrier settings be distributed using the Carrier Services app?

I joined the store Carrier Services beta for my P5a. No magic. Waiting for the magic ; ).

Nope. This will be done either through an OTA update to fix the missing configurations first and then a carrier update from your carrier will actually allow provisioning.

This article may be suggesting these restrictions are applied by Google to preserve pricing options for carriers. This article all but claims unlocked Pixels have less capability than a Pixel purchased from a carrier for that carrier:

CNet And there does seem to be a discrepancy, both in the devices and the pricing. Verizon confirmed to CNET that buying a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro directly from Verizon will get you a phone that works on all of its flavors of 5G, millimeter-wave and Sub-6.

There is, however, a premium for the Verizon Pixel 6. When buying directly from Verizon the phone will cost you $700, or roughly $100 more than Google charges for an unlocked Pixel 6 purchased directly from the Google Store. The 6 Pro starts at around $900 from both Google and Verizon

There are not as many SKUs as carriers, so this would be factory image or something different?

There is a different Verizon OTA officially and there are hardware differences between both.

It's not going to change anything.

Build number list for the November update including Verizon specific build IDs and Australian carrier build IDs and that's all.

https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/133452459/google-android-pixel-security-update-nov-2021?hl=en

Settings > About Phone > Build Number. It's surprising to me these are the only specific carrier builds.

Users of unlocked Pixel 6 global software build on Verizon were complaining they did not get the November update when Verizon locked software build users already had it. That's one problem NZ Pixel users can be thankful they don't have! So so good to get those updates bang on time.

Has anyone here tried rooting their Pixel 6 (or older gen) and gotten VoLTE to work?

No I haven't tried rooting. But I'm waiting for a Kogan sim.
Theres info that previously someone had a phone from Australia that wasn't sold in NZ.
Volte wasn't working on any of the telcos here.
They tried a Kogan sim and managed to have VoLTE and wifi calling work (even though Kogan uses the Vodafone network in NZ).
I'm thinking if Kogan is listed as a MVNO in Australia where pixels are sold then their carrier info is probably loaded.
Anyway, I am waiting for a sim from them to try.

Interesting.

Could be they Kogan Mobile supports all phones they sell on their store and that is a requirement with it's leasing service with other carriers.

If that is the case, this could open up many other phone brands to 5G/Volte/VoWifi.
