I think it's time to stop talking about it and buy a phone. Either will do the job.

Its charging. Talking about it so I know the basics.

I like those leather wallet type cases that let you carry some cards etc, but just dont know how practical they are.

I will need to get some kinda glass screen protector, Ive never cracked a screen, but would like to keep it in good nick.

Edit: I like the look of the Spigen clear tpu air case, good value. Might skip the wallet idea.

If you want to take photos of moving kids or pets, go for the iPhone.

I am also on a Spark S25 and got the April update May 1st. The S24 owners I know using various networks all got upgraded One Ui 7 and then the a subsequent may security / bugfix update in the last couple of weeks.

A few of the phone rumour websites are reporting that S25 devices in Europe have started getting a 1.2GB update so potentially that's what will get pushed in NZ next? Example: https://www.sammyfans.com/2025/06/02/after-s24-samsung-rolls-out-big-new-firmware-update-to-galaxy-s25-series/

The link states "The update still keeps the May 2025 security patch, so this isn’t just about security." so looks to be a patch after the baseline May update.

There was meant to be a major update in May but it's been delayed until June.  May is mainly a security update.

NZ seems to be last on the update list, as they are often released 2-3 weeks earlier in the US.  But probably a good thing if there are issues with the update.

I just leaving my updates on auto, should I be pushing them?

Any tips on a cheap case, I like the Samsung Silicone, but it gets bad reviews for splitting near the S Pen. I like the hard lip above the cameras though.

And do I need an expensive screen protector, PBtech has some $15 tempered glass ones etc. I read somewhere they block the anti reflective coating as well, but no screen protector seems risky for scratches.

I have never damaged a smart phone screen ever and I've never used a screen protector. I'm fairly careful but they get dropped occasionally. I don't see the need for one if you're reasonably careful.

Spigen cases are what I usually use.

a screen protector might interfere with the fingerprint reader. In past years the Samsung branded ones worked the cheaper ones didn’t. I never use a screen protector. I don’t put my keys in the same pocket and haven’t had scratches for years.

neither. perhaps my past galaxy screens werent as tough as this one?

this "Start" AI widget, is it spammy or is it worth using? the same with "now brief"?

I feel a bit overwhelmed and Im not sure if its And16 or OneUI7 or a combination of both. Voice typing seems to have improved. I must try this translator chat function, Im wondering if it only works on phone calls or if it will work on whatsapp?

The other thing is, in the settings the increased sensitivity for screen protectors. im more worried if a protector ruins the screen anti reflective coating etc.

I think the most important thing for you to do now is to ensure you have enough mobile data. As you’re coming from a dumb phone, get as many GBs per month you can afford. Mighty Mobile and Kogan are currently having sales. If you search around you may find from other posts  what the best deals are and when they are for sale. E.g Kogan will have a 50% off sale again eventually.

The other thing I want to know is what I can delete to get a lot of the bloatware off and get it as simple as possible. I think if the S25 Edge was 6.3" it would be the perfect phone for me with a great camera and class leading SoC etc. But happy to play with this for now. Im gonna hook up my partners work hub to play around with Dex.

@TeaLeaf No reason why you can't check for software updates and just install them if one pops up

You can simply uninstall many of the Samsung apps now, which wasn't always possible with earlier versions of OneUI.  Apps will end up on Deep Sleep if you don't use them, so there isn't much to be gained by uninstalling.
