Well, for me, I regularly use my HTC Desire to:

- Browse the web/read RSS feeds
- Listen to music
- Stream music via Audiogalaxy - I LOVE having my entire music collection available from my home PC - really makes use of my 1GB 3G data
- Stream internet radio via Winamp
- Business use (primarily making/receiving business calls and texts)
- Taking notes
- Google Maps/Latitude
- Taking photos
- Diary/organiser
- The odd game
- The odd video/youtube clip

I do like HTC and had a play with my workmates Galaxy S, but I prefer the physical 'feel' of my Desire and the interface, even though I installed LauncherPro removing HTC Sense.

So, what do you guys think?

I generally use it for web browsing, email collection and writing, listening to music, playing the odd game and obviously using it as a business style phone. Bearing in mind I'm running an iPhone 3G on iOS 4.whatever which is sluggish so anything will seem an improvement.

One question, does the sensation have an RDS radio built in?

I'm still wondering whether the Galaxy S will satisfy my needs for a phone or whether I should splash the extra for a newer one...

To the RDS question, yes.

To the last 'question', only you can decide that. Arrange to have a play with an SGS that's running 2.3.4 if you can as the experience is light years better than both 3G and 3Gs. Unless you're an iOS fan in which case all bets are off.

But I think that you were just thinking out loud then anyway, and you'll probably wait for the latest and greatest. One thing about the Sensation that nobody can dispute, is its premium feel. It's arguably the best looking, most physically impressive phone I've seen, and you'll never be accused of buying an iPhone copy.

NZtechfreak: Anyone else really tried to replicate the death grip?

Tried last night for the first time - in the bedroom ~10m from the router with 3 walls between - phone shows full bars, drops to only the dot at the bottom of the reception icon after a few seconds of holding the phone in landscape by the top of the phone, then if I hold the bottom of the phone also it drops connection altogether. Tried it a half dozen times with the same result. Other devices that work fine there: N82, Desire, SGSI, SGSII, tablet, laptops. I note that all the other phones report lower reception in the room, makes me wonder if there is a problem in the Sensations reception reporting. I'll do a video later.

I don't think its too big a deal, but I was surprised that it was so easily reproducible.

I think your point about the reception reporting might be the key here. I've not been able to reproduce this but I can't get that far from the AP. But it seems better for Wifi than my N1 was. Even tethering from one room to the next with the N1.

One of my colleagues has a Sensation he bought in China, and having played with it it does seem like a damn good phone, obviously you cannot compare it with my phone... I guess I'm just curious as to the $200 difference between it and the GS2, and the fact that it is only $100 more than a GS... I realise the GS2 and GS have 16Gb of Memory, but is that and the Super Amoled screens the main differences?

Would I regret not spending the extra $200 on a GS2 if I got a Sensation?!

How does the gaming compare, how much slower is the sensation compared to a GS2?

Sorry lots of questions!

I guess I'm just curious as to the $200 difference between it and the GS2, and the fact that it is only $100 more than a GS... I realise the GS2 and GS have 16Gb of Memory, but is that and the Super Amoled screens the main differences?

Would I regret not spending the extra $200 on a GS2 if I got a Sensation?!

NZTechFreak has been engaged in a head to head between the SGS2 and the Sensation and will be able to help you with those comparisons. The gaming question will depend on the game itself and whether it has been optimised for the phone's CPU/GPU, so there's no easy answer.

Lokhor will be able to offer his gaming experience which is something I haven't concentrated on. Though having said that, a flight sim I've been trialling is smooth and glitch free so far. But a serious gamer will need more info than I can give so I'll have to pass.

The pre-launch special on the Sensation from Telecom NZ is still available as far as I can tell, so that might figure in your calculations.

The two phones are aimed at slightly different markets, so there's no easy answer I'm afraid. We've done some indepth testing using basically every benchmark known to humankind so there'll be plenty of numbers to compare with once we post them. But they don't reveal the user experience in any meaningful way other than the HTC Sensation is 'fast'. They certainly can't capture the interaction with the Sense UI or the slickness of the apps.

That you'll need to be trying for yourself.

That is also how I've been thinking...

If they were at the exact same price, I think I would go with the SGS II, but with $200 separating them, well, it's a lot harder.

I don't think I would go as crazy as NZtechfreak with my installs, but I definitely feel the constraint of only 512MB.

I have 130 apps on my SGS and so far 86 on my HTC Sensation.

My space left is as follows:
HTC Sensation: 570mb
SGS: 1187mb

I don't think I will run out of space on either anytime soon.

I've got 88 installed on my HTC Desire and 26MB free. Of course, this is with me moving as many apps as possible to SD Card. I also uninstalled the Swype beta as no room for that and SwiftKeyX :-(

Dingbatt: I apologise if someone has already raised this but I was able to look at the display 'dummy' phone of the sensation in Telecom's Wellington Central store. What I noticed was that when compared to the screen of my DesireHD, the screen on the dummy appeared to be about 4mm narrower and shorter than screen of my DHD. They both supposedly have a 4.3" screen so I am hoping it is just that the display dummy is only trying to be a reasonable likeness and not exact. I am yet to find a real Sensation 'in the wild' to be able to compare.
Anyone who owns both able to comment?

Just got the Sensation today and didnt do accurate measure but side by side screen on both approximately same length but the sensation is definitely 3 to 4 mm narrower.

HTPC Intel Pentium G3258 cpu, Gigabyte H97n-wifi motherboard, , 8GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 5500 tuner, Silverstone LC16M case, Windows 10 pro 64 bit using Nextpvr and Kodi

not sure why my earlier post appears twice. So far today my Sensation has restarted the sense ui 3 times for some reason. Charging the battery it gets rather hot. Maybe that will settle. I find the screen darker than that on my desire hd but not as much as galaxay s2. I find colours are more natural than on the galaxy s2. Pity you cant try phones before you buy. So overall I prefer screen on desire hd but out of the Sensation and Galaxy s2 even though galaxy s2 is more saturated, I find they are now so close as to not matter. So far now I would choose galaxy s2 over sensation due to being more stable ui and also the xtra built in memory. My feelings may change over next days as I continue and the sensation settles in.
Edit. Should also say side by side the sound is much louder and clearer on Galaxy S2. Even though sound on my desire hd wasnt loud I find it clearer than the sound on the sensation

I compared my Sensation with Lynn Pope's Desire HD at the recent Net Hui. Yes, the screen is *slightly* narrower on the Sensation, but it is actually slightly longer, too. The Q-HD resolution display accounts for the different aspect ratio.

It's a big screen. :-)

Kies put me off moving up the Samsung range. I was happy with the HTC Magic and the Nexus One. OTA updates leave Kies for dead.
