jesteraero: No I haven't tried rooting. But I'm waiting for a Kogan sim.
Theres info that previously someone had a phone from Australia that wasn't sold in NZ.
Volte wasn't working on any of the telcos here.
They tried a Kogan sim and managed to have VoLTE and wifi calling work (even though Kogan uses the Vodafone network in NZ).
I'm thinking if Kogan is listed as a MVNO in Australia where pixels are sold then their carrier info is probably loaded.
Anyway, I am waiting for a sim from them to try.

I have a PH-1 which was a very vanilla / pixel like phone sold briefly before they went out of business. This was never sold officially in NZ (or perhaps even Aus), and VoLTE and VoWIFI does not work on any of the main carriers in NZ, despite having the options in the firmware.

On Kogan however, VoLTE and VoWIFI work without almost without issue. The only "issue" is that when ringing some carriers over VoWIFI, the ringing tone is a little different than the normal ringing tone - it just sounds different. I do not consider that a real issue.

Very interested to see if similar behaviour occurs with the Pixel 6's.

I also have an Essential PH1 which is still being used occasionally. Android on those phones was pretty vanilla. On the Pixel's it is supposed to be completely vanilla but perhaps Google stuck in the carrier limitations for VoLTE that Essential didn't?  I could spring for a $5 Kogan SIM and see if VoLTE works on Pixel 4XL

You could go and buy a SIM and test it yourself and tell us all.

I think it’s their decision to buy the pixel that’s hinging on the result of this, not their decision to buy the SIM card.

And we don't blame them but I think the answer is already there if it supports VoLTE or not(hint you get served Vodafone carrier bundles on Kogan because they use the Vodafone network).

A warning to those purchasing a screen protector.

Look up recommended screen protectors, paying particular attention to compatibility with the fingerprint scanning.

Would the phone see itself as connecting to Kogan or Vodafone? If the pixel sees the carrier-id or whatever as being Kogan, would it still allow VoLTE even if the actual network is Vodafone?

MVNO is still Kogan so it will show as Kogan Mobile(in all caps for some reason), but all APNs and MBN configs point towards VFNZ because it runs on VFNZ.

Not sure if it is as cut and dry as that. My PH-1 for example.

Vodafone - no VoLTE or VoWIFI

Kogan - VoLTE and VoWIFI.

Have swapped back and forth between them and the above is consistent.

Is it actually working?
What does *#*#4636*#*# > Phone information > view IMS service status say?

Yes, it is definitely working. I can turn on airplane mode, enable wifi and make and receive calls without issue.

The above gives Connection problem or invalid MMI code. While that code was running, I did see the indicator change from LTE+ to 3G, but, that was only for that code and not normal numbers.

With wifi off, when I made a phone call while speedtest was running the indicator did turn from LTE+ to LTE in the test just now.

That code is a service test menu. It shouldn't be trying to make a call.

Bah humbug essential!!!

Anyway it's clearly working (by the way thanks this adds to my list of phones that actually has working VoLTE) and this is great but it's just one phone on one carrier. Sample size is way too small to say that Kogan does something different.

And the running bets is that Kogan on a pixel won't make a difference (if it does then a few of us with licenses with ShannonDM might want to look at those modem logs and I'll eat my words).

To be fair it didn't originally. I entered the code in the dialer and nothing happened. I then selected the call icon, it came up USSD code running, then showed the above error.

Looking at the code, it should be  *#*#4636#*#*, not  *#*#4636*#*#. Output from that below.

Cheers.
