Im looking for a device around the $1k mark.

Is the s23 still a compelling buy at around that price? What I really like is Dex, I want to get down to a single device and Dex even uses Office products, plus the ability for cableless if your monitor supports mirracast (my old Sony 55" TV does)

Im considering the Pixel 8 due to its 7 year update support, but its been out half a year already.

I really want a 6.8" screen so thought the Pixel 7 Pro, nice higher res screen, same camera etc but only 5 years support and was released Oct 22, $970.

Then there is the iPhone 13. Doesnt have Google pay? It seems all these phones have cameras of similar quality. although I do prefer the iPhones for the focus support and .dng files, the Pixels dont have a pro mode.

any thoughts on which one would be the way to go?

It gets to the point of needing a spreadsheet for the main pros and cons of each haha. Id love the new s24 but we just dont spnd that on phones, not early adopters.

iPhone 13 has Apple Pay which is the equivalent.

As someone who's a S23 Ultra (12GB/512GB) user (and might be considering parting ways), the S23 series was a giant success for not just efficiency but also for being power houses with great cameras. Samsung's extended support is excellent too.

OneUI 6.1 unfortunately is making me tolerate it(and this is a personal issue, OneUI is fantastic for A LOT of people) hence considering selling it.

What would you get instead? S24U or go back to a Xiaomi/Poco or something else?

I'm not so sure yet.

Xiaomi's 14 and 14 Ultra is extremely appealing but is overly expensive.

OnePlus 12 looks like a bargain and exactly what I've been looking for. I'm just cautious due to being burnt by the 8 in the past (which inspired me to jump into the Telco industry oddly enough), and the 11 had serious issues on the L7 layer with VoLTE. Hoping that's all fixed with the 12.

Pixel 8 Pro is tempting but seeing constant report of modem issues is not exactly confidence inspiring(you can't hide the fact that it's an exynos google stop trying).

I'm extremely picky and it shows 🤣

one reason I dislike my Samsung is exynos processors. are you saying the Tensor 3 is really just a sammy exynos?

I expected Pixel to stick too qualcomm, so these Tensor SOCs had me curious.

None the less I am Tempted by the Pixel 8 Pro, for the screen mostly. I would be happy with the Pixel 7 Pro as its also a good screen for me, but 3 years of updates and 5 of security is not inspiring, thats like one, maybe two updates?

Which is what lead me to the S23 because they seem darn cheap for one generation old. 4 garunteed updates and 5 years of security. are they all qualcomm now or is exynos in the S line, still a thing?

S22 and S23 Series in NZ were Snapdragon variants. S24 is Exynos until the Ultra, then we're back to Snapdragon.

Yep, no matter how much Google wants to taut it's their own chip, it's an Exynos SoC with a different layout configured for Google at heart. Made in Samsung's fab. Same as the Exynos.

That is Fascinating the Google Tensor Gen 3 is made by Sammy. Being Gen 3, will there be some ai stuff coming? Ive not looked into the s24 and what AI stuff it provides, its out of my price range.

But maybe the s23 being around the same price point as the Pixel 8 could be a better buy? ugggh, I still want a big screen, but you cant always get what you want haha.

I highly rate the s23 ultra. It's what I'd buy with your budget no question. It's the safe choice.

Yes that does look nice, but looks $1600 new. Did you mean used or possibly refurbished.

I miss my old Sammy Note 5, that was a great product :-)

I love this channel, $100 desktop replacement via motorola edge + 😀. Wasnt Motorola originally the only other company to make use of the android desktop dev module? "ready for"

It makes for a nice desktop, media and gaming platfom with "Ready" being reasonably as good as Dex (Id still have to give it to Dex if cost saving wasnt involved). We didnt realy get a lot of Moto Edge and Edge Plus devices into NZ did we?

Where would be the best place to buy a phone thats not available in NZ, I dont have an Ebay account as I dont trust it much oddly as its what I use outside NZ. Used phones overseas appear to be a lot cheaper.

also I noted some of those basic ai features are coming to the s23. Of them I think the circle t search could be helpful for me.

I have the S23U and now with all the AI features available there is zero reasons to go with an S24U unless you just want the latest and greatest, and with 7 years of OS and security updates.

Other than that they are basically the same - the minor differences won't be worth the extra coin.

Oh so they already updated the features. Is the s23u the standard 4 OS updates and 5 years security updates?

I cant afford a new one, but maybe used, would it be better to look on trademe than overseas?

Roger that on both fronts.

I am kinda looking to offload mine (1TB version) but I am kinda not so I am a little confused because I have zero reason to upgrade. But I am a sucker for the latest and greatest which means ultimately I am the ultimate sucker! 😂  Sorry it's Friday afterall!

Im not sure whether to trust Facebook, some clearly genuine s23 ultras around $800-950. s24 ultras $1k-1.4k.

Im starting to think used is the only way to go. I just dont want to get sucked in. Like you see some thay say they are brand new s24u in the box for $1k. The used ones for $1200etc look normal with smudges on black plastic as ya do, but a used s23u for $800 makes more sense, if it has warranty, which is what, two years?

edit: trademe, ppl want like $1600 for and s23U. ummmm no.
