Nice work 2degrees. Still crossing my fingers for Google Pixel in store one day.

Consider a Samsung. Less hassle, works fine, supported, warranty, etc. Pixel 8 is fine, but it's nothing special IMHO. My wife's S22 is faster, doesn't get as warm on the fast charger, thinner, and has a telephoto lens.

I got the Pixel 8 because the Pixel 4 was great, and it got more features over the years. So far the Pixel 8 feature drops haven't added anything I use. I was hopeful call screening might work if it's powered by local AI, but nope.

It's still a perfectly good phone, but it's just a phone.

Yes, if I had to replace my Pixel with something local tomorrow it would be iPhone or Samsung both with similar support life now. I agree it's just a phone, with some differences to other just-a-phones. If Pixel was local I'd prefer it and probably upgrade regularly.

Dono:

March 2024 feature update on both Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 today, no VoWiFi for Vodafone/One, but it is there for 2Degrees. Swapped sims and same result on both P7 and P8

A bit of a shame as I've found my P8 has had increased call drops on One recently, I was hoping using VoWifi might be a solution.
Good news about 2 degrees though, work calls will get through...

I'd be keen to hear of any NZ bank app that works on Graphene

And how to get NZ number ported to VoIP numbers and how to use privacy.com CC's in nz.

Thinking about degoogling the pixel 8 pro

I'll probably buy it and test it out over the few weeks.

I just noticed that the Gemini AI Assistant has been released on Google Messages.  Shows up as a recepient and you can ask it (he/she?)  a question and it provides a response you can forward to a recipient. Not sure how often I would use it but apparently most of the AI is done on the phone itself.

Just used RCS for the first time. Still haven't been charged by carrier and I hope it stays that way.

Interesting there is no obvious indication other than a fine print. There's also no option to disable send as text instead like in iMessage?

The other party must be online. Otherwise, it will be SMS. There is no intermediate store and queue. There is no retry. That's how it looks to me. If you could disable SMS then you give up all that intermediate server stuff. iMessage is different I think although it's been a while.

Last time I looked you could go into messages for an individual, settings, and explicitly set SMS or RCS. That option seems to have disappeared when I looked today. Maybe it's been moved, anyone know?

Google seem to continually dumb things down and take away options. Another example, wifi and mobile data are combined in the menu, and Bluetooth is now two clicks to turn on whereas before the last update it was one click.

Under Message Settings > RCS Chats you can toggle "automatically resend as a text if RCS can't send"

That at least will automatically stop it sending an sms message without your knowledge.

Thanks! It's still a bit scary when using RCS as a bit more attention needed to ensure it's not SMS instead of a blue or green arrow.

Probably need to upgrade my phone plan to include calls and minutes...

I was wanting a Samsung just for Dex, but Pixel 8 has 7 years update support and its affordable, although I really want a 6.8" + screen, current device is 6.3" and I suck with my thumb size typing.

However, I was watching Pixel Desktop mode today with combination of the "Taskbar" app installed and its very similar experience to Dex, but it has some bugs that need ironing out like no snap to feature and the taskbar doesnt go to the bottom of the screen, although if used on the sides or top its no problem. I presume a mirror of the users screen res issue.

Will the Pixel get similar AI features to Galasy S series?

I really like the idea of a single device. But I just dont have the funds for the S24 Ultra, but dex and dex wireless looks crazy good to replace my old notebook etc.
