I am looking forward to getting a Pixel 8 Pro when they are launched.

I assume that they will perform all of the tasks (out of the box) which we waited for a long time on previous models. (e.g. VoLTE and VoWiFi)

I also hope that Google won't continue to shun New Zealanders and we can buy the new devices locally.

I'd really like a Pixel 8, but I'll be waiting for someone else to get one and test what works first! If it doesn't have VoLTE going automatically then I'll probably have to go Samsung :( VoWiFi would be a bonus.

all pixels 6 and up have VoLTE and 5G on updated android 13 (on spark / skinny / voda - not sure about 2D). It would be astonishing if the pixel 8 didn't.

Once pixels 6 - 8 update to android 14 they should also have vowifi on Spark (confirmed in betas - nothing about other carriers yet)

Thanks, that's very useful info. I thought there was still a hack / patch you had to put in place to get VoLTE working. I'd probably still wait for the first people to confirm it works, it'll only take a couple of weeks, I can probably be patient :)

My phone is on Vodafone through work, hopefully they get VoWifi working at some point. Not essential, but nice to have.

VoLTE out of the box somewhere in the March - May update.
5G in the July update if I remember correctly.

I live and hope that a NZ telco sells the Pixel 8, especially now they all support VoLTE and 5G on Pixel 6 and above devices.
If not then I'll still buy one from overseas somehow

It seem's pretty likey that we will get native pixel 8's selling in nz at somepoint maybe not at launch but sometime around the new year.

As google seems to have finaly taken the required steps to get most of the funcionality working on nz tellcos.

Everything does work expect for wifi calling which on spark does work on android 14 irrc and on vodafone at least pixel ims works.

So it seems like it would be pretty likey that since they went trough the effort of getting stuff working on pixels for the past year or so.

Given that's all good maybe I will get one on launch day. Hopefully Amazon AU sells them.

I'm in desperate need of a new phone, so Google Pixel 8 Pro is the one i'm eyeing up. Fingers crossed they don't have some annoying issue like battery or glass on the camera shatters etc etc Just imagine if they decided to release it on the Google store in NZ.

I have always liked the concept of the Pixel and old Nexus lines of phones The clean software approach is something that appeals. I owned a couple of Nexus phones and the Nexus 7 tablet. Since Google has been doing the hardware I have stopped short from buying. My son in the UK has owned three Pixel models and has experienced a lot of issues. The last Pixel he owned was the  6 Pro and he finally sent it back for a full refund and has been an iPhone user since. His experience has influenced my decision not to buy.

@MikeB4 what kind of issues? My Pixel 4a has worked flawlessly for four years.

A downside of importing phones is no consumer protection.

He has experience issues with the radios, display. His 6Pro failed three times until he asked for a full refund

He was in the UK and purchasing UK supplied handsets from Telcos

I think he has just gotten unlucky.
Pixels on the whole are very reliable pieces of hardware.
I'm loving my 6a - no issues whatsoever. My fav phone since my nexus 5

I have had a Nexus 4, 6 and 6P
And Pixel 2, 3XL and 6 Pro
All without any problems.
I agree that your son has had a rotten run of luck.

When my iPhone 13 Pro went to Valhalla I came close to buying a Pixel 7 Pro as I no longer wanted an Apple phone. My sons experience put me off as I need a reliable phone given my disabilities.

I decided on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. I may consider the Pixel 8 as I usually have two phones
