Cheers for that mate. Brand new sim when I bought the phone so wouldn't think it would be that. But you never know I may have damaged it when I put it in.

Just out of curiosity why not go on 2Degrees?

Edit: just received a reply from my friend, he's on 2Degrees with the X5 and says that it only goes to emergency calls only in elevators or underground and reconnects by itself with no problems.

Good question, I started off on 2 degrees when I first bought the phone, then vodafones any network text plan came out so I jumped onto vodafone. Most of the time I am in wellingtons CBD but when I travel out I will be roaming onto vodafone anyway, so figured it'll cost me the same amount either way. Although I do miss the cheaper calling rates, Will see how it goes. Can always change back although porting number this many times gets annoying.

So no real reason I suppose. Just testing out the different networks.

Have you tried locking the X5 onto Vodafone? Ie Settings - Wireless and Networks - Mobile Networks - Network Operators - Search Networks and selecting your preferred network, rather than letting it connect automatically?

So I just tried that "violet screen" trick by holding both volume buttons in whilst the X5 starts up, and upon connecting it to my PC it gives me the below list of files within a folder called "image".

I don't confess to know much about rooting and/or custom ROMs, but it looks like the IDEOS X5 could be a pretty easy device to customize to your heart's content. This also seems to be the same thinking on the XDA forums.

I think I'm going to have to learn how to create custom ROMs very quickly.

Don't even need to go that far. Just learn how to port an existing rom to X5 :p

Seriously, if you ported CM 7 rom to X5, I would donate to you

To do this you would have to be an awesome developer. would probably be better to get guys who currently work on CyanogenMod to give it a go.

That's actually not a bad idea. And I've actually just gone and done that.
I included a plea in the Paypal notes to get an X5/U8800 CM ROM in the works.
Hopefully US$15 does the trick. ;)

Have left it locked to vodafone 3g for the last few days. Seems to have been working fine, although by locking it to 3g is presume it wont fall back onto 2g when no 3g is available. Looking at moving back to 2Degrees now anyway, due to the release of their new prepaid package (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=80775) which would make it a cheaper network for me than vodafone. I have been moving around networks a bit but that is just while I try them all out to see which is the best fit for my usage. Thanks for the help so far.

Yeah it does..

Would assume it's a firmware upgrade to enable necessary hardware

A new firmware with WIFI-Hotspot function will be ready in May. Cheers

I was very impressed with my X5 but now have it running @ 1ghz and have to say it significantly better now.

On quadrant benchmark it ran a score of 1680 which I wouldn't have thought is a too badder score for a $500 phone
