I don't really want to give up Sense either, but want some Froyo too... maybe try it out and go back to shipping ROM if I miss Sense too much. Will certainly upgrade when 2.2 with Sense comes out.

I think the rumor about 2.2 officially coming to the Desire before the end of the month is just that - a rumor.

Over 1/3 of my life is spent in front of my HP dx7 Quad Core 2.1GHz|4GB laptop.
A few hours a day in front of my HTC Desire.
My day job: I do asp.net web development for NetPotential.

I'm gonna wait for the official one I think. Then again, check out Launcher Pro - quite a nice home screen thingo.

Just had a look at a couple of Launcher Pro videos. Looks pretty cool.

Just had a play around with LauncherPro Beta. Loving it!! It's noticeably faster than Sense UI, and I really like how the main standby screens work in landscape mode too.

The only downside that I can see is that the HTC widgets don't work with it yet. Here's hoping they will be incorporated in the future!! :D

I'm slowly discovering HTC Sense alternatives - currently playing with ADW.Launcher. It's quite nice, highly customisable but I get the initial impression is a little too complicated.

HTC Sense cons: the opaque panel at the bottom of the screen

LauncherPro cons: I couldn't tell which screen I was on - there are no indicators that I could see. Sense widgets don't work on it.

ADW.Launcher cons: it's a bit complicated, and I'm not entirely sure how the swiping works on the dock/bottom panel. Again, sans Sense widgets.

There's another one called Helix I think - haven't tried it though.

Have to agree with the point you mentioned regarding LauncherPro. Although overall I'm really liking it.

The only thing that's really holding me back from using it as my default Home launcher is the lack of HTC widgets, so if the developers manage to port HTC widgets onto it, then I'm sold.

Just tried Realplayer for music app. Got lots of forced restarts, SD dissapeared for a while and the phone seemed to run slow, uninstalled pronto.

Tried launcherpro too, looks great, but I do like my HTC widgets, so probably won't be rushing to install Froyo just yet....
do all the HTC widgets rely on Sense? could you source them from somewhere and run them on unofficial Froyo on the Desire? If so, and if launcherpro supported them then that's a good reason to switch.
But... do I have the time to do all this, or shall I just wait for the official 2.2 update!?

I think the only think i'm really keen on in Froyo is the ability to access/stream my 130Gb music collection in the Music player! is anyone using an app that already does that? I think i've heard VLC player can do that?

My reason for switching to LauncherPro is actually because HTC Sense home screen annoys me. The solid bar at the bottom with a huge Phone button really bugs me - for me it's a bit of a waste of space and makes the screen feel cramped. The docking bar at the bottom of ADW and LauncherPro are pretty darn cool - customisable and feels more open.

At first I was reluctant to give up my Sense widgets but find there are alternative widgets that work just fine. It turned out I actually only used a couple of Sense widgets!

Now that you mention it, that black bar at the bottom of HTC Sense is actually quite annoying haha.

I only use a few HTC widgets as well, but they are essential to me. Namely the clock/weather widget, and the HTC calendar widget (agenda view and the "upcoming events" view). The HTC WiFi/bluetooth/GPS/mobile internet switch widgets are also superior to the stock Android Power Control widget too, in my opinion.

Oh and I also found that LauncherPro ran painfully slow and choppy if you have a live wallpaper running (I had the Nexus wallpaper running when I discovered this).

Ok tryed installing a Java app it wont install? Also will HTC do a firmware update to be able to save apps to the SD card without jailbreaking

When they update to 2.2 saving to SD will be enabled, however the devs have to support it in their app. I see some of mine already have updates to take advantage of this feature. All HTC have said so far about timing is second half 2010 (there is some speculation from very dubious sources that its coming end of June).

Ambrose_1: Anyone else get a small sim logo with a gear next to it? Been up there since I put in my vodafone contract sim, the logo isn't explained in the manual. It is blank when I bring the bar down too.
