I emailed 2D last Friday about the release of the X6. Got a fone call from one of their CSR this morning. He said release will be end of May / early June..

Has anyone found a sleeve that fits the X5 nicely? At 120mm they are a bit longer and rounder than the iPhone/Galaxy type phones

Look fordigitalera and search on U8800

Hi there, I'm not sure if I can directly approach like this but I am now selling cases for X5's on trademe as well. Not quite the same as Digitalera's cases but still custom made for the x5.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

WiFi Tethering here we come!!

OK, after some investigation it appears that there are a few updates available on the Huawei website for the X5, but in the Chinese section only?! The most recent build for the (Overseas General Version) is the B136 build linked to below. Currently the version that 2D is distributing is the B133 build (at least that is what I have on my phone, which was one of the first out the door from 2Degrees).

At a guess, this is what 2D will be rolling out soon to their customers after they have completed their network validation. The good news is that this is an official Huawei update.

I've just updated my phone to the B136 build using the instructions supplied in the 163Mb download. Result:

1) It is still on 2.2 (no surprises there)
2) WiFi tethering is now available under Wireless & Network Settings - Tethering & portable hotspot.
3) Some of the icons have changed and some of the apps have been updated (e.g. the Market and Calender)
4) It is much faster. Scrolling is a lot more fluid and even after installing all my apps again, it is now scoring over 1450 in Quadrant. This is a 150 point increase over my previous score.
5) The stock Android boot animation now appears when the device is turned on.
6) Even after reinstalling my apps, I appear to have a lot more free RAM.
7) The device is now referred to as a u8800 in the About Phone section.

Things to watch out for:
1) The update will erase your apps and some user data.
2) Be damn sure that you have a Wifi connection up and running before visiting the market for the first time. It will immediately try and resync all you apps, and if this is done through 3G, it will be expensive.

On XDA, they're using B160 with great results although I'm waiting for the official OTA version from 2Degrees before I start with the custom ROM

Looks good thanks, will update this afternoon. 2degrees did comment on another topic saying they should have some news on the official update by the end of the month (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=85&topicid=82631)

Your points 3 , 4, and 6 Appeal to me the most so will update mostly to check these out. I know wifi tethering is what most people are after from this update but I don't have so much of a use for it.

I've been following the XDA threads as well. Personally I'll wait for a Cyanogen version before I start playing around with custom mods. Hopefully the interest in this should be stirred up by the arrival of this handset in the US in the next couple of months. At least with Cyanogen you know what you will be getting and that it has been thoroughly tested before it is released.

The benefit of the update I posted is that it is a completely Stock Huawei supported build, which shouldn't affect the warranty status of the phone but with a number of added benefits.

I notice there is no swype now... I use swiftkey so not bothered but others could have an issue with that....

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that. The Huawei keyboard is MIA as well . . . not that this is a great loss.
