My S2 used to get incredibly hot occasionally when a rogue app or custom rom would run away on me but have to say my S3 has never gone above mildly warm

That's why sound about right. The problem is not stock in S3 and usually it is more than likely related to apps that you installed that causing it to get really hot. Especially the app that uses data.
Had that happened to my S2 with buggy apps and customROM.. Also happened to my S3 once too and it is all related to bad app. Find the offending apps and it should be fixed.

That's interesting, I've been playing "draw something" with him a fair bit and I've found it chews through my battery very quickly and crashes a lot, maybe it was that. It's a stock Rom from Vodafone UK.

Back up issues

I am having problem with backing up using Kies. I can back up nearly everything..and it does so OK..except when I try and back up the "Miscellaneous contents file" I am unable to do so..the best I have achieved is getting through to 92% of the download..and this takes 3 hours...and then it stalls and I get a connection error message.
Any advice?
The other file that I have been unable to download succesfully is the application file.

thanks

So I flashed the stock Jelly Bean a couple of days ago. Found some strange stuff:
  • It had a tendency to be stuttery and laggy the first day but it seems to have gone away now.
  • Whenever I press the unlock button, at times would randomly flash the homescreen quickly before showing my lock screen.
  • There are these two apps called Music Hub and Video Hub that don't work. I'm guessing this is just software that's only available in Europe.
On the other hand, Kies seems to be working fine even without altering the CSC. The battery life has improved (which is strange because for others it's gotten perceptively worse). Oh and Google Now is boss.

Found a fix for running Kies in Win 8 (I am running Build 8400 release preview) and it works well!!!!

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/samsung-kies-wont-openjust-icon-in-task-bar/ff0af9a6-c278-4a19-ad9f-ea99ce44a25c

and its under "Most helpful Reply" part.

I edited that line in TWO of the config files and it all worked...just had to be admin when editing.

I'm running windows 7....everything seems to work except for the 2 downloads that I mention. Can some one tell me if it is normal for it to take so long to download thise 2 files..the miscellaneous and application file.

And I suppose a lot of people use Kies becasue we don't know anything else...whether that is better or not.

Thanks

No, it's not - something else is going on on your device.

I had a look at the Swype forum and found lots of reported bugs to do with cursor positioning, so it looks like the devs know about this problem.  Actually the number of reported bugs is kinda scary, but i guess that's why it's still in beta!

Try do factory format. I don't have any of those issues. But I do hate one thing, every time the screen turned off and press home screen to wake it up it goes back to home screen. I have to keep clicking power button if Iwant to keep what on screen.
Battery gotten slightly worse somehow. I and I still have no deep sleep issues. Couldn't find any apps that woke the phone up constantly.

I had the same issue, its something to do with the wifi search. When you are outside the range, it keeps looking for a wifi connection and gets a bit hot. I'm turning off the wifi before leaving from home and turn it on after getting to the work place.
