Jvipers2: Recently, my device usually disconnects from Youtube while casting a playlist to the TV after like 45minutes in...which then closes the app and returns to the main page of the smart tv menu where all the apps are
Anyone have any idea?
Mine has YT hang every now and then and I am not casting. Playing a video, then moving to another screen and pressing the task manager button (I use three button navigation) Then get to the YT screen and it's windowed and won't expand. I have to swipe up to kill it and start the app again which is a bit annoying. A Google app on a Google phone!
I'm considering buying a Pixel 8 Pro. I live close rurally , and understand that the Pixel 7a signal was worse then most other phones - so its really only suitable for city dwellers ( Ironically, one of the reasons I'm looking at a Pixel pro is it apparently supports VoWIFI on 2 Degrees. That, and its one of the easiest phone to degoogle if I decide to go that root - which is a distinct possibility.)
Does anyone know/can they comment on how good the 4g signal is on the P8P relative to iPhones/Samsungs?

Suggest you look at a Samsung phone that has a Qualcomm chipset. Samsung phones are much better supported in New Zealand, Qualcomm chipsets are significantly better and the brand Google use I forget what it's called right now. The modem in particular is much better in Qualcomm.
My wife's Samsung s22 works well for voice over Wi-Fi on skinny.
Thank you for your feedback - I'll take what you said onboard - Your observation about Qualcomm vs Tensor chipset is useful, and not something I had considered.
I won't touch a Samsung phone. I know its in a way lower league, but I got an A24 which should have been my perfect fit - at a fraction of the price and never again. Unfortunately I had signal issues where it would just stop receiving a signal after a random number of hours - regardless of my location, and after swapping SIMS - and my experiences with Samsung customer support have put me off them - possibly for life. (They ignored what I said, would not let me speak to a tech, tried to charge me 3/4 of the value of the new phone for what they claimed was a hardware failure [after they had already replaced the hardware] because I rooted it - and I never got to the bottom of the problem - I am still scared the issue was related to jail breaking - even though I reset it to factory defaults with a rom and relocked boot loader. I should not have had to file with the disputes tribunal to get [most of] my money back - and I never got a resolution. Its a real pity, because I REALLY wanted
OTOH I do like Qualcomm chipsets - and what you say makes sense about them having better signal. The other phone I'm considering is a Oneplus 12r and I'll focus more on one (I need to confirm if it has VoWIFI on 2 Degrees, and although I will be able to use an aftermarket ROM, It won't run Graphene or Calyx - and the only Rom available right now is an unofficial LineageOS build )
timmmay: Another brand using Qualcomm then. Rooting your phone is likely to make warranty claims difficult. I used to do it, I don't see any need these days.
Tensor is based on Samsung Exynos. They're solid processors but the modern isn't near as good as Qualcomm.
Yeah, the Oneplus 12r is a Qualcomm SM8550-AB Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. The other phones I was looking at used Dimensity Chipset which apparently are a pain for custom rom devs.
Interesting that Tensor is based on Exynos - I did not know that.
gzt: I'm not sure if you need to go pro for the vowifi support. Parallel imported are stocking the 8a in Global and Japan versions. Last guy I talked to - think it was Rosedale - seemed knowledgeable and would probably know or let you try before purchase. Obviously no need if there are concerns about the modem.
yeah - I believe all pixels 6 and up (or maybe 6a) support vowifi on Spark / Skinny
fwiw my 6a has great signal. I work rurally and have no issues with signal - unlike the redmi phone I used to have.
As soon as I am back home in the city 5G kicks in which I get without issue all over town (on Skinny)
I think another point worth mentioning is that on pixels you get a pure android experience - without most of the flotsam that other vendors like Samsung / Oppo add on.

Will be again for the G4 but for the G5 I believe this is changing - the Pixel 9 is already been couched in 'placeholder' terms by some leakers.
Between now and then there's the Nothing Phone 3 and some sort of global release of the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro Hyper Max Ultra is coming on the 6th of June.
So how the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2 stack up will be interesting given we know a lot about them already and the actual release isn't likely to be until October.
If Google sold them in NZ through an NZ storefront, I'd probably consider a Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Is Mobile Station trust worthy? They had the pixel 8 down to $830 a couple weeks back, I may have to wait as thats my budget.
7 year support is full major updates along with security updates etc?
Seems like the best value phone on the market?
I do love the new motorola 50, by far the best looking phone on the market and class leading hardware, the video isnt so great but the stills are. But I highly doubt it will be released in NZ......
I can say that Mobile Station has been around a long time - I bought my phone 3 or phones back - and I only purchase phones every few years - from them and had no complaints at the time. That said, their reviews are "not great". You might also want to reach out to Export Infortech - I've been happy with them for the prices they charge, and they have a physical store in Glenfield. I suspect they will price-match if you ask them.
I'm not sure of the value proposition of the phones - They use tensor 3 chipsets (which I've not had a problem with - I got an 8 Pro because it was the only phone that meets my needs, but $$$$$$) - and they are rumoured to have "not great" coverage, although mine has not had any issues. Have you looked a the Pixel 8a? Not something I landed up buying, but also maybe look at the Nothing phone 2a?
There are good deals on the Pixel 8 / 8a on Amazon from quite regularly. Keep an eye out there, you'll get something before too long.
I outlined why my next phone is likely to be a Samsung with a Snapdragon chipset above.
